Modes of Business Entry and Exit in Family Firms: The Role of Resource Intangibility2018Inngår i: Academy of Management Proceedings: Academy of Management, 2018, Vol. 1Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Are family firms’ business entry (internal development versus acquisition) and exit (dissolution versus sale) mode choices distinct from those of non-family firms, and what is the role played by intangible resources? Building on a comprehensive sample of privately-held Swedish firms, we find that family firms are more likely than non-family firms to enter a new business via internal development than acquisition, and more likely to exit from an existing business via dissolution than sale. Additionally, resource intangibility at the organizational level strengthens the differences in exit and entry modes between family and non-family firms such that compared to non-family firms, family firms are increasingly more likely to rely on the internal development and dissolution of business units as the availability of intangible resources increase. Contributions to existing literature on entry and exit modes and on family business’ strategic choices are shared in the concluding section.

Roots to grow: Family firms and local embeddedness in rural and urban contexts2019Inngår i: Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, ISSN 1042-2587, E-ISSN 1540-6520, Vol. 43, nr 2, s. 360-385Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The present study analyzes the nexus among business growth, ownership structure, and local embeddedness—that is, the involvement of economic actors in a geographically bound social structure—in rural and urban contexts. This work combines regional economics with studies on family business and firm growth and uses a coarsened matched sample of privately held Swedish firms. The findings indicate that family firms benefit more than nonfamily firms from local embeddedness and as such they achieve higher levels of growth and that this effect is more pronounced in rural areas. Research implications are shared in the Conclusion section.

Employee layoffs in times of crisis: do family firms differ?2024Inngår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, ISSN 0898-5626, E-ISSN 1464-5114Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we seek to understand firm behaviour during times of crisis, with a particular focus on family firms in different contexts. We theorize that family control mitigates (i.e. negatively moderates) the relationship between economic crisis and the layoff of employees, resulting in a higher propensity of family firms to retain their employees during a crisis compared to their nonfamily counterparts. Furthermore, taking a closer look at family firms, based on their location, we argue that family firms in rural regions are more likely to adopt measures leading to involuntary job turnover than family firms in urban areas due to a higher sensitivity to the loss of socioemotional wealth following a business closure. Relying on a panel dataset of Swedish private firms active in the period 2004-2012, our study contributes to a better understanding of family firms as employers in different contexts.

Careers in family business: New avenues for careers and family business research in the 21st century2020Inngår i: The Journal of Family Business Strategy, ISSN 1877-8585, E-ISSN 1877-8593, Vol. 11, nr 3, artikkel-id 100379Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our special issue is to demonstrate how a careers perspective can contribute to the study of family businesses and bring to light how the family business context extends and challenges career theories and concepts. Inspired by the studies in our special issue and our review of previous research, we propose a conceptual model that leverages the concept of family embeddedness and intertwines it with career processes and outcomes. Building on the family embeddedness perspective, we propose several avenues for future research for family business and career scholars.

Family firm density and likelihood of failure: An ecological perspective2019Inngår i: The Palgrave handbook of heterogeneity among family firms / [ed] S. Memili & C. Dibrell, Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2019, s. 821-846Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter aims at establishing a link between family business research and regional science. Drawing from the density dependence model from organizational ecology and embeddedness theory, we develop four testable propositions to inquire about the effect of the emergence of family firms’ agglomerations in the territory on firms’ survival.

We theorize that increased family firm density reduces the likelihood of firm failure and this effect is (a) higher for family firms than for non-family firms, (b) lower in urban than in rural areas, and (c) higher in fine-grained variable environments than in stable environments. Contributions and future research implications are detailed in the concluding section.

Boundary objects, knowledge integration, and innovation management: A systematic review of the literature2022Inngår i: Technovation, ISSN 0166-4972, E-ISSN 1879-2383, Vol. 122, artikkel-id 102645Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Enabling collaboration across disciplines, business functions, departments, organizations, and industries is a critical innovation management challenge. Successful innovation depends on effective knowledge integration among diverse actors. The concept of boundary objects to achieve knowledge integration has gained increasing popularity within innovation management. Despite the growing relevance, existing literature reviews about boundary objects are sparse. This review examines how boundary objects enable knowledge integration through a systematic analysis. An integrating framework of the scholarship on boundary objects links existing contributions to key theoretical perspectives on the study of boundary spanning for knowledge integration. Relevant publications are identified through a systematic literature review and discussed according to three themes: information processing, cognitive, and learning perspective on knowledge integration. Potential contributions to broader theorizing are highlighted in relation to three innovation settings: cross-functional collaboration, open innovation, and staged product development processes.

Strings attached: Socioemotional wealth mixed gambles in the cash management choices of family firms2021Inngår i: The Journal of Family Business Strategy, ISSN 1877-8585, E-ISSN 1877-8593, Vol. 13, nr 3, artikkel-id 100466Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Family owners differ from other types of owners due to the presence of socioemotional wealth (SEW) concerns. We take a closer look at this distinctive aspect by examining the impact of family control and influence dimension of SEW on the cash management choices of family firms, conceptualizing it as a mixed gamble choice. Our empirical analysis of 195 Italian firms listed on the Milan Stock Exchange between 2003 and 2015 shows that family firms derive more value and incur lower costs than nonfamily firms when they increase their cash holdings. We then delve deeper into family firms’ cash management choices by exploring how different levels of family control and influence as well as types of board governance arrangements moderate this relationship. The empirical results indicate that the positive effects of family ownership are more pronounced under a high level of family control and influence and with separation of the board chair and CEO positions.

    Radical Innovation in (Multi)family Owned Firms2022Inngår i: Journal of Business Venturing, ISSN 0883-9026, E-ISSN 1873-2003, Vol. 37, nr 3, artikkel-id 106194Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

By integrating organizational learning theory with the family firm literature, we seek to enhance our understanding of radical innovation in (multi)family-owned firms. We theorize that the goal diversity and path dependency that multifamily ownership creates negatively affects the positive relationship between knowledge integration and radical innovation. However, this is not the case for multifamily-owned firms in which family members embrace a commitment to change. We contend that commitment to change mitigates the negative moderating effect of multifamily ownership by ensuring the effective translation of integrated knowledge into radical innovation within the firm. Overall, our results highlight the complexity of radical innovation in (multi)family-owned firms as a product of the joint effect of knowledge integration, the number of unrelated owning families, and a commitment to change.

    Abstract [en]

The majority of small firms lack the resources and competences required to implement advanced international strategies and to engage in global business activities; small firms face considerable barriers when attempting to engage in international partnerships, joint ventures and foreign direct investments, and are more likely to fail than large firms. In this paper, we investigate the role of corporate governance system in providing the small firms with resources and competences and in promoting the changes in the entrepreneurial culture which are necessary to pursue advanced internationalisation strategies. Results suggest that the governance system is important for the cooptation of new members in the strategic decision-making groups of the firm and indicate that the environmental context can be an important moderating variable in the relationship between corporate governance and internationalisation.

Event-sampling method with experimental design: A promising method for investigating microfoundational phenomena within family businesses2023Inngår i: The Journal of Family Business Strategy, ISSN 1877-8585, E-ISSN 1877-8593, Vol. 14, nr 2, artikkel-id 100537Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Over the past decades the field of family business has witnessed a surge in publications and experienced meaningful changes that have served to increase its legitimacy and establish the field as an independent area of academic inquiry. Along with these advancements, scholars have called for experimental research designs that can reveal the influence of individual-level, microfoundational phenomena underlying macro-level family business phenomena. Given the challenge of conducting such studies, the event-sampling method with experimental design (ESME) approach is highlighted as a new opportunity for family business scholars to further enrich their methodological toolbox. Fundamentally, the ESME approach is a longitudinal, repeated-sampling method with experimental design that provides researchers with the opportunity to investigate the effects of various micro-level phenomena within the family business. By facilitating the incorporation of familial variables and processual elements in family business research, the ESME approach can account for the longitudinal and dynamic interplay of family and family business phenomena. Overall, ESME is a method with the potential to help researchers answer many of the “how” questions that remain unanswered in the field of family business. A description of ESME is offered, relevant challenges and opportunities in family business research are identified, and best practices for ESME are shared to support the work of family business scholars.

Understanding Organizational Tensions During Artificial Intelligence Transformation2022Inngår i: Proceedings of The Annual Meeting of The Academy of Management, 2022, Vol. 2022, No. 1, Academy of Management , 2022, Vol. Vol. 2022, nr 1, s. 12745-Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

AI has the potential to be a disruptive technology causing paradigm shifts in industries and greatly impacting both operational and strategic decision making. Adopting AI technologies requires proactively engaging both the technical and social system of the organization as processes, workflows, as well as individual employees, are influenced. This paper explores potential tensions between the social and technical systems in the early change process of AI transformation to understand the nature and degree of AI transformation. We do this by analyzing in-depth inquiry from 23 focus groups involving 112 white-collar industrial employees in large multinational industrial firms using a change management perspective. Our study revealed nine categories of tensions divided into tensions between the current and future state and tensions between humans and machines. This stresses the need to adopt a socio-technical perspective in the attempt to understand organizations approaching AI and provides practical implications for organizations considering adopting AI technologies.

    Abstract [en]

In the present study we argue that a more fine-grained perspective, taking into account different situations of family members’ involvement and the actual implementation of HRM practices and policies, is needed to provide an accurate picture of family firms as employers. Our study is carried out on a unique sample of 849 family firms in Italy and focuses on the conditions and consequences of adopting mutuality-promoting HRM practices in the family business context.

Satisfaction of entrepreneurs: A comparison between founders and family business successors2020Inngår i: Journal of small business management (Print), ISSN 0047-2778, E-ISSN 1540-627X, Vol. 58, nr 3, s. 474-510Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Although a substantial body of literature compares the job satisfaction of employees to that of the self-employed, scholars rarely take into account the heterogeneity of the latter population. We compare the level and the drivers of job satisfaction of founders and successors in family businesses. Building on the notion of procedural utility, which entails the gratification that individuals experience in the process of performing a task, we find that job satisfaction and perceived discretion in decision making is lower for successors. We also find that perceived discretion fully mediates the relationship between mode of entry into entrepreneurship and job satisfaction.

The entrepreneurial financing for the immigrant entrepreneurs: A systematic literature review2020Inngår i: Academy of Management: Proceedings / [ed] Guclu Atinc, Academy of Management , 2020Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There is an increasing interest in the phenomenon of the immigrant entrepreneurship. Despite the increasing number of studies discussing this phenomenon, the financing aspect of the immigrant entrepreneurship topic is still an emergent phenomenon. In this paper, we critically and systematically review the field of entrepreneurial financing of the immigrant entrepreneurs. For this purpose, we conduct a two-step analysis on systematically selected 37 articles. In the first step, we provide an overall description of the field, while in the second step, we perform a SWOT analysis on different aspects of the field including the units of analysis, the main questions and the use of theories and methods in the field. The review identifies some gaps and weaknesses in the field, suggests potential opportunities for the future research, and highlights some threats that could impede the implementation of the future opportunities. Finally, the review suggests further questions to be explored for the future advancement in the field.

The dark side of leadership: A systematic review of creativity and innovation2023Inngår i: International journal of management reviews (Print), ISSN 1460-8545, E-ISSN 1468-2370, Vol. 25, nr 4, s. 740-767Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

It is believed that workplace creativity and innovation are fostered by positive leader behaviours and positive workplace relationships and hindered by the opposite. However, some challenge this view, arguing that creativity and innovation can actually be fostered when employees experience what is increasingly referred to as the dark side of leadership and workplace mistreatment. Research on this area is sparse, contradictory and overly confusing. We begin by defining the dark side of leadership and then provide a comprehensive systematic review of 145 empirical studies on the topic. We review research on a broad range of constructs related to leadership and workplace mistreatment, such as abusive supervision, authoritarian leadership, destructive leadership, narcissistic leadership and relationship conflict. Our review reports the main effects, summarizes the results of the mediating and moderating variables, and highlights methodological shortcomings of the past literature. On this basis, several recommendations are made to advance this field of research.

The relationship between Entrepreneurial Orientation, Market Orientation and Performance in University Spin-Offs2019Inngår i: The International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal, ISSN 1554-7191, E-ISSN 1555-1938, Vol. 15, nr 3, s. 793-814Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper aims to examine the relationship between Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO), Market Orientation (MO) and performance in University Spin-Offs (USOs). Initially, the paper, assesses the existence of a moderating effect of MO in the relationship between EO and performance, next, it analyses the mediation role of MO between EO and performance. To strengthen paper results, we test our hypotheses on a cross-sectional sample of 162 Italian USOs using both perceived and objective performance. Findings suggest that there is no synergistic effect of MO and EO as mutually independent constructs. Instead, our evidences support the idea that EO and MO in USOs occur within the same learning process. Both EO and MO support USO performance, but MO cannot occur without EO as an antecedent condition. At the same time, a significant portion of the EO contribution to performance occurs through MO.

    Gender issues in physician-nurse collaboration in healthcare teams: Findings from a cross-sectional study2019Inngår i: Journal of Nursing Management, ISSN 0966-0429, E-ISSN 1365-2834, Vol. 27, nr 8, s. 1773-1783Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS: The aims of the study were (a) to assess whether the proportion of female nurses and female physicians in a given unit influences the attitude of collaboration between nurses and physicians as reported by nurses, and (b) to examine how these two dimensions interact to influence attitudes towards cooperation.

BACKGROUND: Available studies have documented that gender influences the collaboration between physicians and nurses, but no have explored the influence of specific combinations-such as a high proportion of female nurses and a high proportion of female physicians.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 700 nurses working in 36 hospital units in Italy. The validated Italian version of the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes towards Physician-Nurse Collaboration was used. A three stages hierarchical linear regression was performed by entering: (a) the control variables at the individual and at the unit levels, (b) the proportion of female nurses and physicians and (c) the two-way interaction.

RESULTS: A total of 430 nurses participated; the average Jefferson Scale of Attitudes towards Physician-Nurse Collaboration total score was 48.64 ± 5.27. At the second and third stages of the hierarchical linear regression model (explaining 12.8% and 14.1% of the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes towards Physician-Nurse Collaboration variance, respectively), having more female RNs as staff (model two: ß = 0.61, p =< .1; model three: ß = 0.69, p =< .05) was significantly associated with higher Jefferson Scale of Attitudes towards Physician-Nurse Collaboration scores; differently, higher physician-nurse ratios (model two: ß = -4.09, p =< .05; model three: ß = -4.54, p =< .01), and more female physicians (model two: ß = -1.06, p =< .05; model three: ß = -1.29, p =< .01) were associated with lower Jefferson Scale of Attitudes towards Physician-Nurse Collaboration scores.

CONCLUSION: There is a decreased collaboration as reported by nurses when predominantly male nursing teams interact with teams with more female physicians. However, in units lead by female physicians, having more female members among the nursing team, ensures increased attitudes of collaboration as reported by nurses.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: With the increasing proportion of female physicians and male nurses, unit mangers should be prepared to manage their influence on interprofessional cooperation.

Talent-based and conflict perspectives in family firm governance2013Inngår i: Academy of Management Proceedings, January 2013 (Meeting Abstract Supplement) 11851, 2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Top executive talent has been seen as a core driver of firm performance since it vitally influences how resources are invested and managed to create competitive advantage. However, there is relatively little research into the managerial and ownership contexts which enable that talent to be most effective. We shall argue and demonstrate that within family firms, complementary leadership and ownership resources and circumstances are critical to the effective performance of non-family CEOs. It will be shown that family firms perform best when non-family executives are present within a context that minimizes conflict among owners and executives and among family and non-family executives.

When do non-family CEOs outperform in family firms? Agency and behavioural agency perspectives2014Inngår i: Journal of Management Studies, ISSN 0022-2380, E-ISSN 1467-6486, Vol. 51, nr 4, s. 547-572Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Family firms represent a globally dominant form of organization, yet they confront a steep challenge of finding and managing competent leaders. Sometimes, these leaders cannot be found within the owning family. To date we know little about the governance contexts under which non-family leaders thrive or founder. Guided by concepts from agency theory and behavioural agency theory, we examine the conditions of ownership and leadership that promote superior performance among non-family CEOs of family firms. Our analysis of 893 Italian family firms demonstrates that these leaders outperform when they are monitored by multiple major family owners as opposed to a single owner; they also outperform when they are not required to share power with co-CEOs who are family members, and who may be motivated by parochial family socioemotional priorities.

PUBLISH AND FLOURISH?: ANTECEDENTS AND OUTCOMES OF ACADEMIC GOALS IN ACADEMIC SPIN-OFFS2022Inngår i: Academy of Management Proceedings: A Hybrid Experience, Academy of Management , 2022Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

One key feature defining the nature of academic spin-off (ASO) is the pursuing of non-economic results relevant to the academic context. However, both the drivers and performance outcomes of such academic goals remain unexplored. To address this gap, we hypothesize that academic goals present both benefits and costs for these firms’ profitability (leading to an inverted U-shaped relationship), while they are positively related with publication performance. We also argue that the goal-performance relationship is moderated by academic ownership. Finally, we propose that the importance of academic goals is determined by ASO founders’ prior exposure to academia and entrepreneurship. We find overall support for our hypotheses on a representative and unique sample of 123 Italian ASOs, thereby contributing to literature on academic entrepreneurship.

Non-nursing tasks as experienced by nursing students: Findings from a phenomenological interpretative study2019Inngår i: Nurse Education Today, ISSN 0260-6917, E-ISSN 1532-2793, Vol. 76, s. 234-241Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: During their clinical learning experience, students are exposed to the nursing profession as a powerful structural reality, experiencing the so-called professional socialisation, a process recognised as the basis of professional identity. Inside this process, students progressively acknowledge their professional identity as being composed of several competencies and, among these, also non-nursing tasks.

OBJECTIVES: To explore non-nursing tasks in the context of nursing students' clinical learning experiences.

DESIGN: An interpretative phenomenological study design was performed and carried out in 2016. The COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative (COREQ) research principles were used in reporting study methods and findings.

SETTING: Two Italian Bachelor of Nursing degree programmes located in Northern Italy.

PARTICIPANTS: Students attending their nursing programmes who a) had successfully passed one or more theoretical examinations; b) had one or more clinical learning experiences in varied contexts (e.g. hospital, community); c) were attending the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year, and d) were willing to participate, were interviewed with an open-ended, face-to-face, audio-recorded interview.

METHODS: A thematic analysis was performed.

RESULTS: Participating students (n = 18) were between 20 and 25 years old and were attending the 1st to the 3rd (and final) academic year. Non-nursing tasks were experienced by them according to three main themes: a) "Being out of the scope of the learning experience," b) "Being forced by external and internal forces," and c) "Dealing with mixed outcomes by looking for a compromise." All students have reported learning to perform non-nursing tasks by shadowing clinical nurses and also practising these tasks by themselves. Internal and external forces prompted students to perform non-nursing tasks, which were recognised as having positive, negative, and neutral effects on themselves and on their learning outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS: Non-nursing tasks are acquired since the beginning of the clinical experience, thus shaping the nursing students' professional identity. At the undergraduate nursing level, strategies should be implemented to prevent the phenomena that a) threaten the acquisition of more complex nursing competences expected by patients and society, and b) shape future generations to be flexible and to perform different tasks, included those below their role.

    Abstract [en]

This study analyses the determinants of an individual’s intention to start up a new venture thatinvolves family members. Building on the family embeddedness perspective, we hypothesize theexistence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between the number of individuals in a familyhousehold and the intention to start a family business. Moreover, we argue that this relationship ismoderated by the household income and the individual’s education level. With supportiveempirical results based on data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) from Mexico, our work contributes to research on family embeddedness and entrepreneurial career intentionsby identifying the importance of household-level factors in the family business start-up decision, and by depicting such decision as a distinctive career option in terms of self-employment.

Does increased generational involvement foster business growth? The moderating roles of family involvement in ownership and management2020Inngår i: European Management Review, ISSN 1740-4754, E-ISSN 1740-4762, Vol. 17, nr 3, s. 785-801Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Building upon the upper echelon perspective, we examine the effect of generational involvement in management on various measures of business growth and consider different levels of family participation. Specifically, we argue that generational involvement and the participation of family actors in ownership and management foster cognitive diversity at the TMT level, which may ultimately positively or negatively impact family business growth. Our theory, which is tested using a longitudinal sample of unlisted Belgian family firms, contributes primarily to the literature related to the determinants of family firm growth, which, to date, has paid limited attention to the combined effect of different family involvement factors.

Psychological ownership, knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial orientation in family firms: The moderating role of governance heterogeneity2018Inngår i: Journal of Business Research, ISSN 0148-2963, E-ISSN 1873-7978, Vol. 84, s. 312-326Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Adopting a stewardship perspective and relying on a sample of 93 Spanish family firms, we emphasize the importance of psychological ownership as a primary determinant of entrepreneurial orientation in terms of proactiveness, innovativeness and risk taking. We also suggest that the relationship between psychological ownership and entrepreneurial orientation is mediated by knowledge sharing. Finally, we assess the potential moderating roles of heterogenous governance conditions in terms of the generation in control, generational involvement and family involvement in the top management team with regard to the relationship between psychological ownership and knowledge sharing. Research and managerial implications are shared in the concluding section.

The propensity toward inter-organizational cooperation in small- and medium-sized family businesses2011Inngår i: The Journal of Family Business Strategy, ISSN 1877-8585, E-ISSN 1877-8593, Vol. 2, nr 2, s. 57-68Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The goal of this paper is to explore the propensity toward inter-organizational cooperation in small- and medium-sized family businesses as compared to non-family businesses, and to assess the factors that could influence the establishment of collaborative agreements at the family-business level. We apply transaction governance theories and resource-based views as theoretical perspectives to analyze a sample of 272 Italian family and non-family small- to medium-sized enterprises. Results suggest that family firms are less likely to establish cooperation agreements as compared to non-family firms. Among family firms, cooperation propensity is influenced both by the generation in charge and by the stage of the succession process. Our results contribute to the family business literature, indicating that the inter-organizational strategies of family firms are influenced both by the dynamics of trust formation and by the characteristics of the family-business resource configuration.

Front end innovation and stakeholder involvement in machine tools sector2011Inngår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, ISSN 1368-275X, E-ISSN 1741-5098, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 96-112Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Are there differences among companies operating pursuing different types of innovation in the organisational settings and in the combination of internal and external competencies employed to innovate? In this paper we try to answer this question focusing on the front end phase of innovation because, although the early stages are well recognised as vital for the subsequent success of the entire innovative process, research on these topicis still very limited. Our argument is that, since incremental and radical innovation leverage on different knowledge sources, the organisational approach adopted in the front end to realise the full potential of open innovation will be also different. In particular, we concentrate on front end activities that lead to radical/discontinuous and incremental innovations and analyse the different organisational and network arrangements implemented by companies operating in the machine tools industry. We decided to analyse this particular setting because in recent years the sectoral system of innovation in machine tools has experienced important transformations that have led to significant changes in firms' organisation and technological performance.

Innovation and strategic types of family SMEs: A test and extension of Miles and Snow's configurational model2009Inngår i: Journal of Enterprising Culture, ISSN 0218-4958, Vol. 17, nr 3, s. 257-295Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper is we attempt to construct and validate a typology of innovation strategies among family SMEs applying the Miles and Snow's configurational model. We also try to extend the scope of the model testing the fit between entrepreneurial, managerial and governance characteristics and innovative posture of the firm. Research has been carried out on a representative sample of small and medium family firms of the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia. Results indicate that significant differences in the mentioned contextual variables exist among different strategic typologies of family firms, however some questions remain unanswered and more effort is needed to develop the configurational approach in the field of family business.

Insider capitalism: opening the black box of CEO replacement decisions2013Inngår i: Academy of Management Proceedings: Meeting Abstract Supplement 15492, 2013, Vol. 2013, s. 15492-15492Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we analyzed the behaviour of family owners in the relationship with non-family managers, focusing on the CEO replacement decision. We compared family and non- family controlled companies and explored the differences among family firms with respect to relevant governance attributes. We perform our analysis on data drawn from a panel of Italian listed companies over a 10 year period. Our results suggest that family owners are special category of major shareholders with respect to (1) the definition of goals that the CEO must pursue and (2) the characteristics of the monitoring process.
