Fostering growth through business development: Core activities and challenges for micro-firm entrepreneurs2017Ingår i: Journal of Management and Organization, ISSN 1833-3672, E-ISSN 1839-3527, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 167-185Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As a concept stemming from practice, business development has received scarce academic attention. In this paper, we explore core business development activities of micro-firms and the challenges they perceive in conducting them. Based on interviews with 30 micro-firms, we identify three core business development activities that leverage the firm's resource base, complemented by three support activities that secure and organize the firm's resources. We find the business development activities to be tightly related to the three practices of leveraging, securing and organizing resources. We also identify three important contextual influences on business development in micro-firms: industry, age and if the firm is in an incubator. Our findings contribute to developing a conceptualization and theorization of business development for micro-firms, which is relevant as the vast majority of companies worldwide are micro-firms, but many never embark on a growth path. Based on our results, we outline practical implications, for example, how companies could overcome their perceived lack of time and an agenda for future research encouraging further studies comprising micro-firms with different qualities.

Open innovation in the construction industry with a specific focus on Swedish wood-construction companies2014Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This report aims to deascribe the present status of open innovation in general and more specifically in small and medium sized companies and the construction industry (part 1). Further the aim is to provide an illustrative overview of the present status of open innovation activities among Swedish wooden construction companies (part 2) and finally to discuss how the application of more open innovation activities in the Swedish construction industry could enhance product development (part 3). We are aware that this report only represent the first step in a process and we hope it will, in a true open innovation style, enhance future activities in order to develop our joint knowledge.

High-growth firms and the use of formalised planning and control systems2014Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making, ISSN 1462-4621, E-ISSN 1741-5187, Vol. 13, nr 3, s. 266-285Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research has argued that with growing size firms increasingly rely on more formalised planning and control systems. This paper addresses what kind of systems high-growth companies use and perceive as most beneficial for their growth. A pilot study served to identify which planning and control systems medium-sized firms most commonly employ as well as how these are perceived in relation to business growth. Findings from the pilot study were translated into an e-mail survey administered to the entire population of medium-sized high-growth firms ('gazelles') in Sweden, generating a response rate of 35.2%. In the pilot study, three formalised planning and control systems were identified as most commonly used. A clear majority of the surveyed gazelles use one or several of these systems and perceive them as important for achieving continuous growth. However, the integration of these systems (strategic planning, management systems, and enterprise resource planning) was rather low. Overall, strategic planning was the system relied on the most, while management systems were used the least. The originality of this paper lies in the exploration of the use of different formalised planning and control systems and their perceived relation to high-growth.

Family firm longevity and resource management: Financial and social-emotional wealth rationalities2015Ingår i: New ways of studying emotions in organizations / [ed] Charmine E. J. Härtel , Wilfred J. Zerbe , Neal M. Ashkanasy, Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2015, s. 173-213Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we explore the impact of socioemotional and financial wealth on the resource management of family firms. We use MoDo, a Swedish pulp and paper firm, covering three generations of owner-managers from 1873 to 1991, to grasp the shifting emphases on socioemotional and financial wealth in the management of the company. Identifying four strategic issues of decisive importance for the development of MoDo, we analyze the organizational values that guided the management of these issues. We propose that financial and socioemotional wealth stand for two different rationalities that infuse organizational values. The MoDo case illustrates how these rationalities go hand in hand for extended periods of time, safeguarding both financial success and socioemotional endowments. However, in a situation where the rationalities are no longer in line with the development of the industry context, the conflict arising between the two rationalities may have fatal consequences for the firm in question.

Family-Firm Identity Across Generations: The Swedish Pulp and Paper Firms MoDo (1872-1990) and Korsnäs (1855-2011)2013Ingår i: History by Generations: Generational Dynamics in Modern History / [ed] Hartmut Berghoff, Uffa Jensen, Christina Lubinski, Bernd Weisbrod, Göttingen: Wallstein Verlag, 2013Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The chapter builds on a longitudinal study of two family-owned Swedish pulp and paper firms: MoDo and Korsnäs. Drawing on the concept of "family firm identity" we investigate how the character of the two firms as family businesses has been sustained over generations and through changes in the firms' startegies and business contexts. We conclude that the concept of family firm identity needs to be applied in a differentiated manner in order to capture the reality of family busineeses. Based on our cases we identify three dimensions along which family firm identity differs: 1) explicit vs. implicit family firm identity, 2) owbership vs. management oriented family firm identity and 3) general vs. specific family firm identity.

The contextual embeddedness of enactment processes the rise and fall of an entrepreneurial family firm Modo 1872-19902010Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In the familiness literature it is assumed that family businesses control idiosyncratic resources thanks to the interaction between family and business. These resources are a source of sustainable competitive advantage, as they are difficult to imitate. One such resource is “the family business identity”. At the same time are family business often accused of being stuck in historical path-dependent routes, preventing them from renewal. This tension between path-dependent resources creating family-specific advantages and path-dependent resources as an obstacle to entrepreneurship is in focus in this paper.

Reviewing the history of a Swedish family firm MoDo, We discuss how a family business identity with entrepreneurial elements developed over time. From the case we theorize on the inherent paradox between change and stability embedded in this family business identity and argue that the apparent paradox is resolved when institutions at two analytical levels (the company and the industry) are combined.

The dynamics of path dependence on the individual, organizational and the field levels: MoDo, the Kempe family and the Swedish pulp and paper industry 1873–19902016Ingår i: Management & Organizational History, ISSN 1744-9359, E-ISSN 1744-9367, Vol. 11, nr 2, s. 189-210Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Path dependence is a promising and increasingly popular perspectivefor analysing long-term historical developments in firms, industriesor referring to other units of analysis. A central assumption is thatpaths can narrow down as a result of self-reinforcing processesthat eventually result in a lock-in that is difficult, if at all possible, toreverse. Typically, path dependence is investigated relating to onepath on a specific unit of analysis, e.g. an organization. The presentarticle explores how different paths on different levels of analysis caninfluence each other. Empirically, we use the long-term developmentof the Swedish pulp and paper company MoDo as the focal level ofanalysis. The organizational level paths are then related to paths onthe field level of the Swedish pulp and paper industry and to pathsrepresented by individual owner-managers’ ways of thinking. Weconceptualize the dynamic interplay between paths by elaboratingon processes of path-spreading, path-breaking, path-convergenceand path-divergence.

A Historical Investigation of the Strategic Process within Family Firms2006Ingår i: Journal of Management History, ISSN 1355-252X, E-ISSN 1758-776X, Vol. 12, nr 1, s. 100-114Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose of this paper: The primary purpose of this paper was to perform an in-depth analysis of the strategic process that occurs within family firms.

Design/methodology/approach: This study analyzed the historical development of the growth strategies of five family firms in the United States, Finland, and Sweden.

Findings: The results of this study suggest that family firms typically adopt conservative strategies in the early part of their life cycle. During their formative years, family firms often implement financially conservative strategies and place an emphasis on maintaining tight control of the strategic decision-making process within the family unit. However, the competitive pressures experienced by family firms over time often force these companies to embrace a more entrepreneurial posture during the latter stages of their life cycle.

Research Implications: The stage in the company life cycle plays an important role in determining the strategic behavior of family firms. Future research aimed at replicating the results of this study may help shed further light on the strategic process that occurs within family firms.

Practical Implications: Although the firms examined in this study were from various cultures, their strategic development over time was very similar. This tentatively suggests that the evolution of the strategic process that occurs within family firms may be generalizable across cultures.

What is original/value of paper: Our findings indicate that there may be an important distinction between family firms and entrepreneurial organizations. That is, all family firms are not necessarily entrepreneurial, especially early on in their company life cycle.

Initiation of Hoshin Kanri in SMEs using a tentative process2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Hoshin Kanri is a management method supporting strategic work. In spite of a number of Hoshin Kanri success stories in large organizations, little research attention are given to SMEs. This research encourages an increased focus on Hoshin Kanri in SMEs. In this paper a tentative process for the initiation of Hoshin Kanri in SMEs is outlined. We also identify factors influencing the initiation of Hoshin Kanri in SMEs based on findings from eight case studies. The result shows that the initiation of Hoshin Kanri varied in the case studies as the factors enable or hinder the initiation of Hoshin Kanri.

Introducing the Hoshin Kanri approach in small and medium sized companies2014Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In order to grow, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have to balance the inherent flexibility of the small firm with formal work division and administrative routines. This balancing is apparent in SME’s approach to strategy work. In order to address this need of balancing in strategy work we in this paper introduce the Hoshin Kanri approach to the SME context. Based on an extensive literature review we identify the principles of Hoshin Kanri and develop an adapted approach to small and medium sized companies. Finally we report on the lessons learnt after initiating the adapted approach in four SMEs.

Industrial Wisdom and Strategic Change: The Swedish Pulp and Paper Industry 1945-19901997Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to complement and elaborate theories of stability and change in the field of strategic management. From theextensive description and analysis of the Swedish pulp and paper industry development, the industrial wisdom is identified. This wisdom, as expressed in the debate among industry experts, is described in terms of issues, labels and solutions which together reflect both situational beliefs and more deeply seated institution& beliefs.

The industrial wisdom changes incrementally as situational beliefs change. However, periods of deep change also occur in which one or some institutional beliefs are in the process of change. The understanding of the nature of deep change is enhanced by the distinction of structures in three dimensions; infrastructures, relational structures and beliefs structures. The pace and nature of change varies according to the inherent changeability in these three struttural dimensions.

The relationship between the industrial wisdom and strategy formation processes can be typologised into three approaches. The adaptive appxwxh describes a formation process in which top executives tend to follow industry-wide issues, labels and solutions. The stretching approach describes a process in which top executives engage to change industry wide opinions in one or several issues. Hence, pursuing the stretching approach, new industrial wisdom is in some respects emerging. The challenging approach, finally, in a more fundamental way oppose situational beliefs which eventually leads to changes in some of the institutional beliefs taken for granted by most industry experts.

The result of this study is the emerging language described in the above, which aims at providing researchers as well as practitioners with new insights - which (hopefully) will enable them to better understand social change processes. Finally, in the quest for contextual management, a speculative attempt is made to apply the emerging language to managerial practice.

Industry-wide Belief Structures and Strategic Behaviour: The Swedish Pulp and Paper Industry 1945-19802005Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review, ISSN 0358-5522, E-ISSN 1750-2837, Vol. 53, nr 1, s. 91-118Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The link between collective belief structures and strategic behaviour has been the focus of extensive research in several disciplines. Few, however, have studied the phenomenon using an entire industry as a unit of analysis. In the following paper the debate on the shortage of wood in the Swedish pulp and paper industry (P&P industry) during 1945-1980 is used to further our knowledge of this link. The result is that further understanding of the link between industry-wide belief structures and strategic behaviour requires more knowledge of the industry-wide belief structure as such, the nature of the debate in which this belief structure is produced and reproduced as well as arguments and justifications of strategic behaviour. Suggestions of how to analyse these aspects are provided in the paper.
