    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Today, humanity is trying to develop in all areas of life, so that we can reach a cleaner, more modern, and more sustainable world. This study highlights the importance of architecture to improve areas of life. This report talks about a type of architectural design. It is called biophilic design which means to combine nature with buildings. This study is about biophilic design in school buildings.

Method: To perform the survey, three different methods were chosen. The first method was a questionnaire sent to college students and high school students, the second method was interviews conducted with knowledgeable architects who have extensive experience in the subject of biophilic design and the last method was literature studies.

Results: All data collected from the questionnaire, the interviews and literature studies are summarized as follows:Most college students and high school students think that when you are closer to nature it makes you feel better and that it would help improve the teaching process. Architects who were interviewed thought that biophilic design in school buildings has both advantages and disadvantages, but in general they support the idea of using and spreading the idea more in Sweden.

Analysis: The analyzed data have shown that it is possible to implement biophilic design on the inside and outside of a school building in unusual ways. But many problems will arise, and one must have the will to continue to maintain these materials. It turned out that having these natural elements in school will contribute to a positive effect on the learning environment and the students themselves. For example, as a more creative, calm, and de-stressing environment. Having a green roof seems like an innovative idea but it requires a lot of maintenance.

Discussion: This study focuses on how to implement biophilic design in a school building and what impact it has on the learning environment. The study addressed what is required to integrate the qualities of nature in the right way to maximize its effects. Studying biophilic design, nature and how it affects people and architecture and its impact on people has helped to lead to a clear result.

    Abstract [sv]

    The memetic evolution of latin american architectural design culture2021Inngår i: Buildings, E-ISSN 2075-5309, Vol. 11, nr 7, artikkel-id 288Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Architecture is an evolutionary field. Through time, it changes and adapts itself according to two things: the environment and the user, which are the touchstones of the concept of culture. Culture changes in long time intervals because of its cumulative structure, so its effects can be observed on a large scale. A nation displays itself with its culture and uses architecture as a tool to convey its cultural identity. This dual relationship between architecture and culture can be observed at various times and in various lands, most notably in Latin American designers. The geographical positions of Latin American nations and their political situations in the twentieth century leads to the occurrence of a recognizable cultural identity, and it influenced the architectural design language of that region. The nonlinear forms in architecture were once experienced commonly around Latin America, and this design expression shows itself in the designers’ other works through time and around the world. The cultural background of Latin American architecture investigated within this study, in terms of their design approach based upon the form and effect of Latin American culture on this architectural design language, is examined with the explanation of the concept of culture by two leading scholars: Geert Hofstede and Richard Dawkins. This paper nevertheless puts together architecture and semiology by considering key twentieth century philosophers and cultural theorist methodologies. Cultural theorist and analyst Roland Barthes was the first person to ask architects to examine the possibility of bringing semiology and architectural theory together. Following an overview of existing semiological conditions, this paper analyzed Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco’s hypothesis of the semiological language of architectural designs of Latin American designers by examining their cultural origin. The work’s findings express the historical conditions that enabled the contemporary architecture and culture study of Latin America between 1945 and 1975 to address the “Latin American model” of architectural modernism.

PERCEIVED BRIGHTNESS OF COLORED LIGHT: A study about the perceived brightness of near-monochromatic light in comparison to neutral white light2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Recently, there has been a notable rise in the use of colored lighting for both indoor andoutdoor spaces. This trend necessitates a clear understanding of the principles behindselecting lighting levels that are both ergonomic and energy efficient. The objective ofthis study was to establish guidelines for planning colored light. An experiment wasconducted where the perceived brightness of three different near-monochromatic lightswere compared to white light. The stimuli covered a narrow visual field. 33 personsaged 18-40Y participated. Through the measurement of the participants' perception ofthe amount of colored light required -to achieve the same level of brightness as withwhite light- the study was able to determine a percentage-based relationship betweencolored and white light. The result showed that there were clear differences in theperceived brightness of the different colored lights, in line with earlier research withsimilar conditions. This implicates that the results may be used as a foundation whenplanning colored light.

Creative play sculptures from a sustainable and intermedial perspective2023Inngår i: Environmental Emergencies Across Media: Abstracts, 2023, s. 5-5Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation aims to broaden research of children’s culture and sustainability by treating the visual arts in an educational environment, namely Sofia Sundberg's play sculptures at a Swedish preschool. Place for life and place to grow are the project’s governing principles, to be inaugurated in February 2023. The sculptures are designed to become bearers of life by promoting biological diversity. The sculptures differ therefore from traditional play sculptures that since modernism are experience-based (Druker 2008). For one sculpture, the artist also creates a book dedicated to story time.

During the presentation, the artist relates the idea, the artworks, preparations, inauguration and collaboration with the municipality and school. Anette Almgren White contributes with a theoretical anchoring in ecocriticism, intermediality and children's perspective by exploring approaches to the environment, sustainability and collaboration between man, animal, and nature the sculptures encourage. Useful concepts in this context are ecoliteracy and cross-species solidarity to understand the interdependent relations. (Almgren White 2020).

The perspective includes, in addition to the visual arts works, the collaboration between sculpture and book in relation to sustainability in materials, the importance of place, young children's meaning-making and the preschool's pedagogical mission (Skaret 2014, Hvit Lindstrand 2015, Lpfö18 (Skolverket).

Microinteractions: Don’t forget to raise your hand!: A qualitative study concerning microinteractions in digital meeting platforms and the impact they have on workflow efficiencies in the creative industry.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This research paper studies the extent of how microinteractions are utilized in Microsoft Teams and the impact that they have on workflow efficiencies, specifically in the creative industry. In a novel time where Covid-19 virus has increased the demand of digital platforms, the importance of research within remote meeting utilization, and the interaction possibilities within, is of utter importance. Also, since we are missing out on the spontaneous interactions that occur when meeting face-to-face, the microinteractions within digital meeting platforms now carry a heavier weight when interactions are solely occuring remotely.

The data collection was achieved through a qualitative approach consisting of participant observations and semi-structured interviews. The results of this research proved that microinteractions are used frequently within digital meetings in Microsoft Teams, but in different contexts and in different constellations. The results also identified that microinteractions, which hold the right conditions, can streamline workflows in certain scenarios. This study concluded in interesting data that answered the research questions but also opened up for further research due to the topic being of a novel field and in a special time, in this case referring to the pandemic and Covid-19.

Development of a visual brand language and a mobility aid2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Medical technology is a field of work with connection to prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and care. The company Human care is a well-established company in Sweden with red rollators seen all over Sweden. The product family of Human care has four different units of mobility aid solutions. These are lifting devices, rollators, healthcare beds, and convertible chairs. In common they share the same brand, but they do not have any clear connection to each other when it comes to form, colour and texture.

In this thesis a visual brand language is developed and created for the company. At the same time, it is implemented and developed on a lifting solution for patient mobility in the healthcare. To find a brand language which should be easier to implement on the products investigations into the brand and products has been done. By trying to find a common ground in the current products the step from creation to implementation of a guideline will be smaller. Further, research has been done in colour psychology, ergonomics, surface textures and forms.

The result of this thesis is a guideline which the company can use as a base when developing new products. In this thesis, it has been implemented on a lifting device for patient transportation.

The Path of Independence in the Music Industry: Exploring how independent artists promote themselves through digital media and how record labels support artists in their careers2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: In this world of rapidly developing technologies, it has become less of a challenge for individuals to start a career within music and promote their brand. The emergence of social media has revolutionized digital marketing and facilitated the distribution of music across different online platforms. Artists working independently in the music industry have been challenged to undertake a dual role of being both a creator of music, as well as a marketer.

Purpose: This research covers an uninvestigated topic. The paper firstly explores the various possibilities for self-promotion for independent artists, provided by living in a technological world. The second aspect which is examined is how record labels can support artists in their careers through doing their promotion campaigns and establishing their brand identity.

Method: This is an exploratory qualitative study, which was conducted deductively. Eight semi- structured interviews were held with independent artists working with music in Sweden, the findings from which were organized through a thematic analysis. The design of the research follows a case study approach.

Conclusion: The empirical findings suggest that independent artists use a DIY (Do It Yourself) approach in their careers, specifically in the marketing of their music and their personal brand. Using features provided by social media channels, distribution companies and music streaming services, as well as having consistent personal branding were some of the ways in which independent artists digitally self-promote themselves. On the other side, labels support artists by having bigger budgets and doing more outspread digital promotion campaigns, which allows the artists to focus on the creation of music, rather than on marketing planning and decision-making. The study contributes to research within the field of music marketing. Furthermore, suggestions for future research are provided.

Image regression-based digital qualification for simulation-driven design processes, case study on curtain airbag2023Inngår i: Journal of engineering design (Print), ISSN 0954-4828, E-ISSN 1466-1837, Vol. 34, nr 1, s. 1-22Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Today digital qualification tools are part of many design processes that make them dependent on long and expensive simulations, leading to limited ability in exploring design alternatives. Conventional surrogate modelling techniques depend on the parametric models and come short in addressing radical design changes. Existing data-driven models lack the ability in dealing with the geometrical complexities. Thus, to address the resulting long development lead time problem in the product development processes and to enable parameter-independent surrogate modelling, this paper proposes a method to use images as input for design evaluation. Using a case study on the curtain airbag design process, a database consisting of 60,000 configurations has been created and labelled using a method based on dynamic relaxation instead of finite element methods. The database is made available online for research benchmark purposes. A convolutional neural network with multiple layers is employed to map the input images to the simulation output. It was concluded that the showcased data-driven method could reduce digital testing and qualification time significantly and contribute to real-time analysis in product development. Designers can utilise images of geometrical information to build real-time prediction models with acceptable accuracy in the early conceptual phases for design space exploration purposes.

    Abstract [en]

It is increasingly important for cities to attract visitors, potential new residents and businesses. Jönköping is one of the cities working with place marketing, a strategy that intends to mediate a positive image of the city, in order to accomplish just that.

People often have a need to preserve the memory of a trip into something tangible. Anyone visiting Jönköping encounters a souvenir choice, much like the one in many other cities. Linked to the idea of positive place marketing, our work aims to investigate how we as product developers can create a product that en¬hances the image of Jönköping based on the thought that all residents are con¬sig¬nors. Accordingly, we develop three different products from the residents' own image of the city.

    Our research questions are:

Based on the photographs, what image of Jönköping do the ambassadors mediate of their own city?

As designers, what in Jönköping's history versus the image of Jönköping today, can we seize in order to give products for visitors a sense of authenticity?

As designers, how can we use knowledge of place branding in the development of souvenirs?

We performed interviews within three different aspects: history, souvenirs and place branding, all focused on the city of Jönköping. The interviews and a work-shop formed the basis for the further design process.

This work has resulted in three products: the matchbox Det nya Jönköping i en historisk förpackning, highlights an important part in the city's history and becomes a conversation piece. Lek dig genom Jönköping want to show visitors what the city offers, and distinguish it from others, from the on-site. Detaljerna gör staden is an every¬day object and function can get residents to begin to discover the details of their own city.

Through the use of knowledge and theories of place branding and souvenirs, we would argue that we have found a way to actually catch the residents' image of the city in a number of products. We also believe that it would be able to apply this type of project in other locations to create more authentic and at the same time innovative souvenirs.

Creative arts for sustainability transformations: Exploring children’s theater for the UN Sustainable Development Goals2023Inngår i: Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene, E-ISSN 2325-1026, Vol. 11, nr 1, artikkel-id 00124Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article responds to recent calls for more creative expressions of climate and sustainability transformations. In particular, research literature argues that the formulation of new narratives of sustainable societies may function as a prominent intervention for system changes. Yet, few empirical studies exist on how creative climate and sustainability storytelling elicit varying levels of awareness and engagement. With the intention to advance scholarship in the role of narratives to create engagement with sustainability transformations, this study investigates children’s theater for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as one research site. By analyzing the interactive children’s theater play “Esmeralda and the Dragon—The Global Sustainability Goals,” we show that creative storytelling can offer a meaningful space for engagement with Agenda 2030 and the UN SDGs. In particular, we find that (1) children’s cognitive and emotional associations and experiences shape the meaning of and responses to the SDGs and (2) the play’s fictional elements resonate with children’s emotional frameworks. Based on the results, we argue that new stories are needed for sustainability transformations and that there is transformative power in the creative and performance arts in this respect, and we call for further exploration of various publics engagements with sustainability storytelling.

Konsten att kommunicera ett varumärke grafisk2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

försöker slå sig in.

    Abstract [sv]

Comrades!: En kvalitativ undersökning om kommunistisk representation i samtida populärkultur2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Songs and Their Pedagogical Functions: A Content Analysis of Six Swedish EFL Coursebooks2024Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to examine how songs are included in Swedish EFL coursebooks aimed at the courses English 5 and English 6, what functions they serve and what this communicates about the pedagogical value of songs for EFL teaching and learning. This study also aims to examine what differences there are in the inclusion and usage of songs targeting the different courses. The material was gathered through a content analysis of six coursebooks, three aimed at English 5 (Viewpoints 1, Solid Gold 1, and Blueprint A Version 3.0) and three intended for use in English 6 (Viewpoints 2, Solid Gold 2, and Blueprint B Version 2.0). The books were analysed by applying the concepts of explicit and implicit communications of pedagogical value through the lens of Krippendorff’s approach to textual analysis (Krippendorff, 2019, p. 29). The results show that most differences in the inclusion and usage of songs in the coursebooks targeting the different courses relate to how songs are included, but also that there are significant differences in how the songs are used. Furthermore, the results also show that the inclusion and usage of songs in the examined coursebooks convey conflicting messages about their pedagogical value. The usage of songs shows that there is a reliance on the intrinsic pedagogical value of songs for EFL teaching and learning. Nonetheless, songs are used sparingly in relation to other text types in the coursebooks.

Sustainable web design in the e-commerce sector: Evaluation and proposed improvement of existing guidelines2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, the web development industry has made websites more sustainable through green hosting and sustainable approaches in both back-end and front-end levels of websites. This study evaluates and aims to improve existing guidelines for designing lower-impact websites in the e-commerce sector. First, the study investigates the Internet users’ awareness of the Internet’s carbon footprint and their impressions of existing lower-impact websites. This data is then used to construct and conduct focus groups. The Internet’s impact on the environment and existing lower-impact website solutions are further analysed and dis-cussed in the grocery e-commerce context. These findings are then used as a base to build a lower-impact grocery e-commerce website prototype and test it with users and evaluate its attractiveness based on a hedonic/pragmatic model. The study reveals that users are pretty acceptive of the front-end changes to a website to make it more sustainable and willing to change their online habits. However, as current user awareness and knowledge about the Internet’s carbon footprint is very low, any changes to the User Experience (UX) of a website to make it more sustainable need to be communicated to the user.

Artificial intelligence in ideation for design and product development in the fashion industry: An exploratory study of professionals’ attitudes and determinants influencing the adoption of artificial intelligence for ideation in the fashion industry2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: As the landscape of the fashion industry is challenged by the emergence of big data and high sustainability demands, efficient solutions for product innovation and development are required. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is generating organizational shifts in various industries, but the fashion industry is still very early in its adoption. AI shows abilities to facilitate the challenges of the industry, and its application in creative design and product development processes is estimated to hold potential.

Problem: As the fashion industry is characterized by creativity and human ideation, there is a need to evaluate if AI is compatible with the values of the industry. Management’s attitudes are proven to influence the adoption of digital technologies, leaving implications to study the attitudes of professionals in design and product development towards AI as well. Further, it is relevant to understand the possibilities and limitations of utilizing generative AI in creative processes, to ensure a successful implementation.

Purpose: This thesis aims to investigate the implementation of AI in creative ideation and product development within the fashion industry, particularly exploring the attitudes of fashion professionals toward the relationship between human ideation and AI to determine the industry’s current position.

Method: This study utilized qualitative research design by conducting 10 semi-structured interviews with professionals working in the fields of fashion design, product development, and AI.

Conclusion: The results show that AI is currently not implemented within fashion, among the interviewees. The study identified determinants, such as awareness, attitudes, data, knowledge, objectives, and competencies that influence the adoption of AI, in the early stages. The attitudes toward AI are an essential factor in the early stages of adoption.

How we play: A qualitative approach to casual games, players and engagement2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study examines engagement regarding casual mobile games. It does so by studying elements of user experience and user interface and how these elements either facilitate or discourage engagement. Self-Determination Theory, flow state and absorption act as the theoretical framework in conjunction with the Game Engagement Questionnaire developed by Brockmyer et al. (2009). The theoretical framework is the base upon which the data collection model was developed as well as how the collected data was analyzed. The results suggest that elements with a negative impact on UI and UX negatively affect player engagement. The data implies that usability, autonomy, skill-level balance are all related to the players ability to enter a flow state, in which the player engagement is high. The results also suggest that fiction is an important factor to the player, as the participants displayed dissatisfaction with the games that contained (to them) unappealing fiction.

    Abstract [en]

Taking our cue from the impact of Joseph Kosuth’s 1965 conceptual artwork One and Three Chairs, there has always been one and three museums-the cosmos is the museum of light, the city is the museum of space and given the job of the museum is to indefinitely accumulate time the museum today is the museum of time. In this paper we present a fourth-the museum of the future. The museum and the department store were concurrent designs of industrialization; one-the store-collected the here-and-now and sold it as what-might-become while the other-the museum-collected what-was and projected it as what-we-have-become. However, the manifest crises of the planet illustrate the limits of our capacity to persuade ourselves we can imagine a future in which we want to live, and cast urgency on the long-term design project of being together. And the project of being together in the urban age is driving us to change the entire terrain of thought and action. Where once ideas drove change, change now appears to be split between two projects whose temporal dimensions govern the notion of ‘future’. One is the busy sharing of digital records of the as-found, and counter to this digital archive is the revival of designs of what-might-become illustrated in the boom in digital imagery of fantasy futures. In order to now imagine a future it has become necessary to navigate the competing time frames of the digital archiving of the past and the digital reproduction of the future. But for Jacques Derrida the question of the archive is not a question of the past but a question of the future, the very question of the future, of a response, of a promise and of a responsibility for tomorrow. According to him “the archive-if we want to know what this will have meant we will only know tomorrow.” And Hal Foster disconnects the archive from the museum when he questions “Might visual culture rely on techniques of information to transform a wide range of mediums into a system of image-text-a database of digital terms-an archive without museums?” In this paper we propose this temporal disjuncture-archive and future-can be bridged by the design of what we call the Museum of the Future whose windows open onto the permanent present. The Museum of the Future is not a location for the sentimental accumulation of time in the form of tasteful objects. According to Cedric Price “neither knowledge nor value can be stored and contained in a particular place” therefore “the museum of the future initiates a process of constant revision that assures the contingency and non-solidity of a building”. Following from Price we propose the Museum of the Future is a continuous interior whose form, stretched to compass the cumulous cloud of digital sentimentality and reproduction, functions as a sedimentary layer for our imaginings of increasingly populous and proximate future relations.

CONCEPT FOR A PORTABLE ASSISTIVE LIFTING SEAT2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This project consists of the design of a concept for a portable assistive seat in collaboration with IKEA. The aim of the project is to create a solution that fits within the Omtänksam family of products and shares the company’s values of what is so-called Democratic Design:

Form - Quality - Low Price - Function – Sustainability

The Omtänksam Family is focused on products that can help the elderly to have a more comfortable life while blending with the home environment. A portable assistive Lifting Seat is a real need for many people that require some extra help when standing up or sitting down. The main goal of this project is to design a cheap, safe, simple and light product that can assist people for reducing the effort that is required from them. The product must be comfortable, easy to transport and friendly to interact with. Considering a mass manufacturing perspective is very important to meet the previously formulated requirements. The force that the assistive seat releases must keep performing efficiently during the product service life. A locking system must be provided for avoiding the lifting force to act when the user is sitting, assisting only when it is demanded. This Thesis describes the process of designing a concept for a Portable AssistiveLifting Seat involving different areas such as ergonomics, semantics, manufacturing, mechanical engineering and materials science. The design approach in this case is driven by the Democratic Design Principles combining the human-centered design with a market perspective. The result takes advantage of form and material for avoiding the need for any extra lifting mechanism. This solution is way simpler than any other one existing in the market and it integrates the solution for many different problems in one single piece. This simplification of the problem allows reducing the production cost and helps to meet the intended requirements creating an innovative product for the market.

NEW CONCEPT OF A STROLLER CANOPY2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis report describes the process of designing, developing and building an accessory for a stroller that protects the kid from rain and sun. The project is a collaboration with Thule Sweden AB, in Hillerstorp. The work starts with developing a new concept idea for Thule’s category “Active with kids”, in the line of strollers, and with a focus on the Southern Europe market, more concretely Spain. The design proposal fits and expresses Thule’s vision and brand language. The project started with gaining knowledge about the market, investigating the user needs with surveys to find out the design goals. An iterative process of ideation, brainstorming and building mock-ups ended with a final concept that was going to be further developed. A full-scale model was built to test the idea from the functional and aesthetic perspective. The materials used were mainly fabrics, foam, zippers, thread and a lot of sewing. The result is a new stroller canopy for different weather conditions. It is well equipped to improve parents experience when going out for a ride with their child. It has to be mentioned that this master thesis research section was conducted in pairs, between Berta Cester and Nerea Cuello, and the rest of the phases was an individual work. As a result, two different products were produced for the same category, the stroller market.

The Rise of Dark Mode: A qualitative study of an emerging user interface design trend2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 poäng / 22,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – As screen time per individual increases, more users of digital devices experience ocular related diseases. The purpose of this study is to gather reasons for the vast popularity Dark Mode gained in contemporary society, by investigating previous design eras. As a general lack of trend analysis within user interface design has been identified, the goal of the study is to lay the foundation for further research in the field of user interface design.

Method – The study relies on a qualitative literature review. Publications related to Dark Mode, light-on-dark color schemes and digital trends were analyzed for topic-specific content that was then elaborated to give a critically viewed framework of the emerging trend.

Findings – The results of our study indicate that various factors led to creation of the hyped trend, known as Dark Mode. It was first and foremost practicality of the light-on-dark color scheme that paved the way for Dark Mode. All operating systems, many apps, platforms and even websites incorporated it in their design. Being an optional feature, Dark Mode makes it more comfortable for users to use their devices outside the light hours or in environments with bad lighting conditions. With Dark Mode users get a far-reaching personalization tool, that visually changes essentially the whole OS or app. From a psychological point of view this improves user satisfaction, as humans naturally are seeking way to be in control. Being in control of own devices is undoubtedly an important aspect of it. Besides that, Dark Mode houses potential to lower energy consumption of devices and provides users with longer battery times. This, however, only applies to devices with display technology like OLED, where backlighting is at least divided into zones, that can be turned off when not in use. Devices with conventional LED displays cannot benefit from lower energy consumption.

Implications – The study indicates that individuals use Dark Mode for a more satisfying user experience as they feel e.g. less eye strain with a dark themed user interface. Editing and coding software is mostly designed in a light-on-dark color scheme, as users often work for long continuous hours on screen, surrounded by dark environment. As screen time per individual increases, more users are experiencing ocular diseases. In counteraction, society demanded dark themed interfaces for operating systems, websites, and apps. As individuals were already using unofficial dark themes on different interfaces, tech companies started releasing system updates to make Dark Mode a choice. As Apple released their user interface update just in 2019, Dark Mode is still a relevant trend discussed in the industry and society. Experts indicate that Dark Mode is here to stay, as it satisfies preferences of many users and makes current OLED screens and future digital devices with appropriate display technology more sustainable.

Limitations – The time frame of the study, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic greatly limited the possibilities of conducting the study. Due to the novelty of the trend, there is lack of previous research, which limited the view on the subject to only work available.

Keywords – Dark Mode, dark-on-light color scheme, retro trends, user interface design, user experience, digital trends, display, screen, screen time, eye strain

Development of a plaster luminaire module for the installation in ceilings with small mounting depth2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The history of plaster goes at least 4000 years back to the time when Egyptians built their pyramids. Plaster is a widely used surface material for walls and ceilings mostly known from stucco or ornamental work. Nowadays, plaster has not only architectural but many more applications. During the last decade, some companies identified a potential in the lighting sector and the possibilities of plaster in lighting design. [1]

Georg Bechter Licht is an Austrian company which focuses on lighting design and fixtures. It is a multiple price winning company for in-built plaster modules with the goal to develop high quality and unique products, seeking to challenge the status-quo.

This thesis project aims to solve a common problem of small mounting depths in drywall ceilings. Also, a new mechanism is developed for better installation and maintenance reasons. Additionally, the new product has the purpose to strengthen the companies portfolio by creating a statement design.

BRISTFÄLLIGT UTNYTTJADE STADSRUM: -En fallstudie av Friaredalen2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: This master thesis is written within the area building technology at Jönköpings Tekniska Högskola. It is made in collaboration with Arkitekthuset Jönköping AB. The study is supposed to be useful as a basis for the urban planning of growing cities to avoid lost spaces. The thesis will also include proposals for how lost spaces in Friaredalen could be developed.

Method: The data collection has mainly been done through observations but also through interviews and a literature study. The people interviewed were professionally active within areas that are related to urban planning, lighting, and urban design in the municipality of Jönköping. Both quantitative and qualitative data has been studied in the thesis.

Results: Only the interview answers that most clearly answer the research questions are presented under the title results. The full-length interviews are presented as appendices. The results of the observations are also presented under the same title. They were performed during days of sun, low wind velocity and without precipitation.

Analysis: The analysis of the empirical indicates that parts of the park are used to a great extent. It also indicates that parts of the park are used to a small extent and have potential for development. The part that seems to be used to the least is the green areas in the north end of the park. The parts of the park that are frequently used can also be analyzed and eventually developed.

Discussion: The case study shows that there are parts of Friaredalen that are lost spaces. One goal of this work was to bring forward suggestions for improvement, which has been made for the spaces that was shown to be lost. The observations made according to Gehl’s proven approach were successful in that they provided data showing that parts of the park have a lack of visitors. This data helps answer the report’s questions. The interviews also provided data that was useful for answering the questions.

Text Placement in SNS forEffective Communication: A qualitative study investigating the most favourable text placement onmedia sharing SNS advertisements to best communicate informationthrough text2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to conduct a qualitative study investigating the mostfavourable text placement on social networking sites (SNS) to best communicateinformation through text. To discover a suitable placement for text, we utilizeconscious and unconscious visual gaze points from participants. To discover thevisual gravity of participants, the research methods of eye tracking and survey areused. The eye tracking supplies unpretentious and real-time behavioral insight asgaze points. Whereas the survey supplies subjective conscious visual gravity data.Previous research suggests that users are drawn to elements containing text.Furthermore, another theory describes users seeking task-relevant information, agoal is to uncover where is the best placement to aid users seeking task-relevantinformation. The conclusion of this thesis uncovered that users are drawn to textelements unconsciously, but conscious visual gravity could be based on imageexposure. Furthermore, the most favourable placement for text is centered along avertical axis on a 1:1 image and slightly higher than the horizontal axis line.

Gamifying Environmental Education for Young Minds: A Comparative Study of Gamification versus Traditional Methods for Enhanced Learning Outcomes and Engagement2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The technical field is expanding swiftly and the educational field is no exception. Mobile applications, tablets, and e-learning are integrated into standard pedagogical plans to increase motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes whereas gamification, the method of implementing gaming elements in non-game environments, has been argued to be a useful tool in terms of enhancing both engagement and learning outcomes. It has been demonstrated that gamification is effective when teaching different complex subjects, and environmental sustainability is one of them. With the looming environmental crisis inflicting new issues every year the need for effective education in the subject grows more and more important. However, the integration of gamification, e-learning, and environmental education for younger children remains quite unexplored. This research therefore aims to fill this knowledge gap.

In order to fill the gap, two prototypes with the same content were developed. Firstly, one traditional text-based application worked as a digital book, and the second integrated gamification elements, working as a memory game. The prototypes were tested in a user test with children as participants. Half of the participants tested the digital book and half tested the memory game. The study was supplemented by an interview and an examination taken before and after the user test to determine how much the participants had learned from the application. The statistical results lacked a significant difference both in engagement as well as learning outcomes, however, with a slight favor of the gamified application in terms of engagement and of the digital book in terms of learning outcomes. The qualitative results, on the other hand, provided the insight that participants found the gamified application more fun and engaging, supporting previous research. It also provided observations on the behavior of the participants, such as competitiveness and nervousness, and its effects on the less successful learning outcomes for the gamification application. The findings suggest that while gamification holds potential, its design must be carefully aligned with educational objectives to be truly effective, leaving room for further research to investigate this field.

Planlösningsprioriteringar av prefabricerade tvåplanshus2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Purpose: Important for house manufacturers is to keep track of specific customer preferences and priorities to have products that matches these. If a manufacturer does not have a product that fits the customer priorities, manufacturers will lose customers both before and during the process has started. The goal of the study is to report what house manufacturers should prioritize in the floor plan design of prefabricated two-storey houses.

Method: The study has been conducted with a variety of methods. In order to study customer preferences and priorities a survey was made for potential house byers and interviews with house manufacturers sales agents. To get an overview about the changes that are most commonly performed, an analysis of documents on two of Götenehus house models was made.

Findings: The results of the study show the kitchen's high priority among potential house buyers. Clearly shows that, above all, the social spaces in the form of kitchen living and dining room is generally very high priority among the general population In Stockholm. The study also shows that these rooms were desired with a relatively large surface area. It was also very unusual for these rooms to get reduced space.

Unlike the social spaces, the private spaces hade ha wide range of demands. Above all, the bathroom and the master bedroom had highly prioritized. The other bedrooms were however generally one of house buy’ers lowest priority. In general, the service areas were shown to be the lowest prioritised rooms. The laundry room was desired to be large with great storage units, but were rarely executed as wanted.

Implications: The social space, master bedroom and the bathroom has a great importance for customers in Stockholm County. House manufacturers should prioritize these rooms. In contrast, house manufacturers should not prioritize room as office and WC/D. Doing so, house manufacturers can offer customers a product that minimizes the impact on costs by changes.

Limitations: The study deals only with prefabricated detached two-storey houses. The study does not include factors such as finance, property space or family constellations. The study was limited to the Stockholm County because of the concentrated market for two-storey house. The gathered information was not extracted prior ten years.

BILDPRODUKTION MED BARNS LÄRANDE I FOKUS2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of the project is to create knowledge and reflection for middle school children to contribute to public education in the community and help in efforts to make the Jönköping County Museum of next-generation museum as well as Sweden's best museum. In order to create knowledge and reflection has pictures of environments from the 1600s Visingsborg been developed and combined with images from the present. Everything is designed with thoughts of the middle school children and the museum's various requirements. In order to produce the different requirements have I interviewed the museum staff. To get a picture of how middle school children work and how they assimilate knowledge, literature studied, an interview was made with a middle class and an interview with an art teacher.

The results show that children are attracted by the image theories which means how an image should be designed to make it interesting. They learn and reflect when they can associate to things, when it emerges something that is previously known, and if they are interested to learn and reflect. Thus, the images have been adapted for children's interests and what they are already previously known. In the second part of the work dealt with how the demands of work functions and how best should work towards a client.

The requirements specification work has played a central role and has been a good tool and basis for discussion during the work. The consequences of the result is that it works fine as long as you work needs-based and focuses on the target audience. In order to meet the clients' demands close cooperation is important and to sit in the workplace is an advantage when quick decisions and reconciliations. Work limitations is that I only have developed images of the area behind the curved wall, designed for middle school students. The images deal exclusively designs from the present and the 1600s. The contemporary images produced with photographs. 1600's of pictures are produced using 3D technology, and photomontages.

Can AI perform the work of human designers?: A qualitative study on the impact of AI on digital design professions.2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Numerous facets of society have undergone major change as a result of the quick development of technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has established itself as a particularly remarkable and controversial breakthrough among the countless technical advancements, and is influencing numerous different industries. Given its transformational potential, it is critical to investigate how AI is affecting the digital design profession.

The research aims to discover how the digital design profession is influenced by the adoption of AI from the perspectives of industry professionals. Thus, the research explores factors such as current knowledge and usage of AI, experience with significant changes in work practices, and attitudes towards the use of AI-tools.

This study is being conducted using a qualitative research methodology. Interviews with relevant designers working in the sector and literature reviews are part of the process. Important information is gathered during these interviews, which is then analysed. The major goals of the interviews are to understand the participants' perspectives on the matter, learn about their AI experiences, and determine how AI isaffecting their work practices. The study sheds light on the overall attitudes regarding AI, encompassing expectations and concerns, by assessing the manner in which AI is used in creative processes.

The research's conclusions show that different respondents have various viewpoints and awareness about AI. Regardless of designers' explicit acknowledgement, AI has already found its way into different design processes and tools. As a result, it can be said that AI has had an more or less impact on the digital design industry and certain fields of work practices. However, depending on the various roles and tasks involved, various implications apply. While the majority of professionals exhibit a strong desire to explore and utilize AI, naturally occurring scepticism and a lack of knowledge might prevent its general acceptance and adoption.

Framtagning av justerbara möbelben2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
