Kontroversiella frågor i undervisningen: En litteraturstudie om undervisningsstrategier i undervisningen om kontroversiella frågor i klassrummet2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a qualitative content analysis that problematizes views on controversial issues in teaching. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pedagogical strategies proposed by research in the teaching of controversial issues. The qualitative method gives me the opportunity to describe and examine the content of the text. This study is based on eight scientific articles and the information on these articles are not meant to be generalize controversial issues in teaching, since the articles do not represent all researchers' opinions on which strategies are most suitable in a classroom. This study problematizes the articles in relation to terms of prejudice, multiculturalism and diversity. These terms will help to explain why controversial issues occur and why it is important to have an open and inclusive environment in the classroom. The result shows that some teachers, in the research in question, discuss controversial issues from an ethnocentric perspective and conflicts are explained by ethnic diversity. The result also shows that some teachers embrace different strategies to meet the controversial questions that occurs in the classroom. One strategy that the articles highlight is the teacher’s willingness to raise different perspectives for nuancing the image of Islam and Judaism. Another strategy that the articles highlight is to tone down the conflict perspective by highlighting similarities between the Abrahamic religions. Furthermore, the results show that there is a controversial perception among the students in the research that Muslims are portrayed as terrorists, religious fanatics in the media. For this reason, students need to be taught controversial issues to balance the one-sided picture of religions that the media provides, where the teachers uphold an intersectional perspective in their teaching.

Min broder har blivit en kristus för mig: En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av teologin kring uppenbarelsen och kyrkan i Dietrich Bonhoeffers bok Liv i gemenskap2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

In this essay I focus my study on Bonhoeffer’s book Life Together, published in 1939; the book contains Bonhoeffer’s thoughts of the church. The objective is to explore how the concept of revelation relate to Bonhoeffer’s theology of church. The Dutch theologian Michael P. DeJonge has studied Bonhoeffer’s theology of revelation. He argues that Bonhoeffer’s thoughts on the matter differentiates from the influential and contemporary thoughts of Karl Barth. Bonhoeffer speaks of revelation in terms of “a person”, specifically Jesus Christ. Bonhoeffer’s intepretation of how the human and the divine come together in the person of Chirst is the foundation of his idea of revelation. DeJonge’s conclusions are of great importance to my analysis. I have used his compilation as a lens in my study, thus making the theology of revelation made visible in Life Together. In my study I come to the conclusion that Bonhoeffer’s theology of “a person” is very much present in Life Together. Bonhoeffer’s understanding of human and divine in Jesus Christ is what makes the church possible. Bonhoeffer considers this union to be what gives the church authority to act as the remaining body of Christ on earth. My conclusions also indicate that Bonhoeffer speaks of the church members as revelation. Revelation comes in the shape of the Church; the Christians together constitutes the body of Christ. This is expressed by Bonhoeffer as if other Christians has become “Christ to me”. At the same time, it is clear that Bonhoeffer wants to separate the church from all other kinds of communities. To Bonhoeffer, the Church must be seen as nothing but the body of Christ.

Religious Education in a Multicultural Classroom.: Seven students' experiences of religious education in Sweden.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to investigate how students in upper secondary school experience religious education in a secularizedand multicultural society. This study was conducted using a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews with seven students in upper secondary school. The students that participated in thissurvey positioned themselves as atheists, Muslims, and Christians. The interviews were constructed with the aim of producing a result that reflects the students' experiences of religiouseducation in upper secondary school while considering the students' own experiences of religion. The students' experiences were analyzed and discussed in relation to the Swedish curriculum's description of the purpose of religious education and previous research on religious education in a multicultural and secularized Sweden. Thisresearch shows that there are varied perceptions of how religious education is perceived by studentsbased on their knowledge and experience of religion. Those students who identified themselves as religious, and whose environment consists of a majority with a cultural background other than Swedish, find that religious education tends to deal with aspects that differ from their knowledge and experience of religion. This study also shows that religious education in Sweden is experienced as dealing with religions and cultures on a general level. A common factor identified in the survey is that students findit important to learn about religion through increased discussion and integration whichcontributes to a deeper understandingof religion. This is perceived as a need forreligious education in a multicultural and secularizedsociety. The result presented in this study is also reflected in previous studies conducted in the discipline of religious didactics. This indicates that there are some challenges as well as some opportunities for development regarding religious educationin a multicultural and secularizedsociety.

Herrens måltid: En komparativ litteraturstudie om nattvardsfirandet i Svenska kyrkan, Pingst och Jehovas vittnen2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to examine the eucharist in three denominations of Christianity, namely Svenska kyrkan, Pingst and Jehovah’s witnesses. These groups are examined individually, followed by a comparison of the different views of the eucharist. The information the examination is based on are different official documents provided by the named denominations’ theologians and elders for both members of the church as well as the public. The comparison is followed by a discussion about the relationship between the denominations’ view on eucharist and their ecclesiology, i.e. their view of the church.

The results show that the differences between them are much due to the sources they use to support their claims as well as their individual history. The similarities are found to be due to a general desire to unite all members of the congregation and to let everyone take part in a collective connection with Christ regardless of whether or not the partakers roles in the church. The discussion about the relationship between the three denominations’ relationships between eucharist and ecclesiology show that the eucharist is a somewhat good representation of the general denominations’ views. This conclusion aligns with the view of Scott W. Bullard’s research about the relationship between the eucharist and the church, where the result is that the eucharist is a foundation of the church’s construction and organization.

Den muslimskt feministiska utmaningen: En analys av kvinnors framställning i koranen ur ett muslimskt feministiskt perspektiv2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the depiction of women in Quran from an Islamic feminist perspective. The questions that my study is based on are: How is the woman accounted in the Quran according to Islamic feminists? How do Muslim feminists argue and what do they base their reasoning on? My study is based on analyzes of the feminists’ works and statements. The results were analyzed with the help of different theories including Miriam Cookes “multiple critique”, Jan Hjärpes “The Islamic basket”, Jonathan Potters “methodological relativism” and Luckman & Bergers “social construction of reality”. The main result of this study is that it highlights how different Islamic feminists interpret the Quran in relation to the present and how their interpretations have created debates internationally. I also discuss the importance of new interpretations and the globalization for Muslim women.

    Abstract [en]

The essay is a qualitative study based on interviews with school curators and a student coach who in various ways in their work come into contact with girls who live in an honor culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Swedish school treats girls who in one way or another live in an honor culture and how the schools work with honor issues. The research question that has formed the basis of the study was the following:

How does the Swedish school respond to honor culture?

The results are analyzed based on the previously presented research, Al-Baldawi's theory of the individual-centered and group-centered way of thinking, and Hylland-Eriksen's theory of the creation of a “we” and “they”. The results show that honor culture occurs within the Swedish school and is given more attention, partly because professionals have more knowledge and experience on the subject but also because the interest has increased from different quarters to investigate the phenomenon. However, all respondents agree that more and different kinds of efforts are still needed to give the girls support and help, but above all to work for prevention.

Islamofobi: En undersökning av muslimska kvinnors upplevelser av utsatthet för islamofobi2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the portrayal of Islam and Muslims in Swedish textbooks published between 1968 and 2018, and whether there has been a development in the portrayal. The material that has been analyzed is five textbooks aiming towards the Swedish secondary school. The chosen method and theory for this paper is critical discourse analysis, within this theory, the three-dimension model by Fairclough was chosen to analyze the results. The result showed various representations, the ones that stood out were Islam and Muslims as “the Other” in correlation to the west, homogenous, violent and male-dominated. The development one could see were that the first three textbooks, written between 1968-1997 showed a clearer representation of Islam and Muslims as homogenous while the textbooks between 2009 and 2018 sought to represent Islam and Muslim to a greater extant by highlighting a variation within the religion.

    Abstract [en]

Producing religion on film is not new and investigating the production of religion on film has also been done before. Popular culture has never been so present in our everyday life as it is today, therefore the interest in popular culture is big. This qualitative content analysis examines how Muslims are produced on film. The films used in the survey are: American Sniper, The Hurt Locker, Not without my daughter and Desert flower.

Previous research on the subject shows that films generally produce a stereotypical image of Muslims. Researchers argue that instead of showing that culture and individual may be the reason for some opinions or ways the angled the films to make it seem that everything has to do with Islam. The implicit message is then that only Islam is the cause of the Muslim mindset and action.

The results of my survey are the same results as previous research shows, Muslims are stereotypically produced, women wear veil and men are evil and aggressive.

"Swedenborgiansk Anarkism": En politisk-teologisk studie om relationen mellan mystik teologi och politisk filosofi hos Ivan Aguéli2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay, my aim is to investigate the correlation between the political philosophy and theology in the Swedish nineteenth century painter, activist, mystic and vagabond Ivan Aguéli. The study places itself in the field of political theology, where the question of, and in some cases the search for, a theological affirmation or neglection of political and social authority is being processed. The results from the study is being discussed with some of the thinkers in this field in order to illuminate the results in the light of well-established theories and concepts. The interest of this essay is foremost to investigate how the individual notion of the nature of God effects the notion of social structures, which on a structural level can affect how our societies are being organized. In the study it becomes clear that the neoplatonic modalistic understanding of God and an anarchist morality and organizational form strengthen each other in Ivan Aguélis political theology. Aguéli holds the view that a new politic and a new understanding of the metaphysics is inseparable. Because of this view the individual process of salvation and the anarchist revolutionary struggle is understood to be utterly co-dependent. Therefore, the abandonment of the prevailing civilization and the birth of a new spiritual and social body occur simultaneously.

Key words: Ivan Aguéli, political theology, anarchism, mysticism, religion and politics, hermeneutics

Tid, politik, befrielse: En politisk-teologisk undersökning av tidens politiska implikationer hos Martin Hägglund och David Bentley Hart2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this essay, I examine the correlation between time and politics in Martin Hägglunds philosophical project. By examining the view of time and politics in the works of the theologian David Bentley Hart, I establish a discussion that exposes different metaphysical standings and raises new questions. I conduct this examination in the light of the ongoing discussion about theology and political emancipation in the field of political theology. One of the main conclusions of the essay is that an important division appear between an ontological and a Christian eschatological concept about the relationship between time and eternity. I also conclude that the belief in a transcendental sphere that intervene in history can bring forth different types of political implications, which all tend to lean towards a concept about this world as a second to last. Throughout this essay, I deepen my discussion concerning the supposed emancipatory or totalizing political consequences of this cosmology, which, in this essay, is represented mainly by Hägglund and Hart.

Är Gud ond?: En analys av Jobs bok i relation till utilitarism och den kristna värdegrunden.2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to study the book of Job from the Old Testament, in order to establish the potential evil of God looking at it with the utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill. I will chart the ethical dilemmas that I can find in the book of Job with a hermeneutic method. I am using a qualitative method in order to penetrate deeper into the potential dilemmas that can be found. I am then looking at the ethical dilemmas that can be found from a utilitarian perspective in order to judge the actions of God as right or wrong. In order to define if God is good or evil, I make a definition of evil with help from Christian ethics, exegetics and philosophy. The potential evil of God is in this way defined through utilitarianism and Christian ethics.

I later put the utilitarian values that I’ve distinguished through a hermeneutic method against the Christian outlook on life that is mentioned in the Swedish national curriculum Lgr11. The hard thing about using the book of Job is that it belongs to the Old Testament, while Christian ethics are usually based on the New Testament. The book of Job is often defined as metaphorical literature, or literature containing a moral message about the trust and faith that every man should have in God.

Bibeln, Ideologi och Praktik: Pastorer ur Pingströrelsen och Homosexualitet2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present study is an interview study with the aim of investigating how the interpretation of the interviewed pastors, from Pentecostal congregations, correlates to their biblical ideologyand biblical practice in relation to parts of the Bible which have to do with homosexuality. That is to say, how their expectations of the Bible, and the ways in which knowledge can be drawn from the texts therein, as well as the methods they use to reach their interpretation, impact their interpretation. The material consists of eight semi-structured interviews based on the method developed by Nyström (2021) which she has named bible-reading interviews and is analysed through the lens of James Bielo and Brian Malley’s theories of evangelical bible-readings.

Previous research on the fields of biblical interpretations in a Swedish context, and of the interpretation process in relation to homosexuality in Sweden is lacking. This indicates a research gap that this study aims to fill. The result of this study shows that there is variety in how the pastors interpret the texts, as well as, what they focus on in their readings and that most differences can be traced back to a difference in biblical ideology. Their interpretations are shown to be heavily based on their understanding of how authority is attributed, both to the Bible as a whole, and between the different texts therein. Since the Bible contains contradicting statements, some texts are granted more authority by the pastors. How this authority is attributed has to do with the pastors understanding of the Bible and the ways in which they can draw knowledge from it.

The result of the study also goes to show that even within what, in a Swedish context, is a relatively conservative religious tradition, there are varying interpretations of what the Bible preaches on the subject of homosexuality. This highlights the importance of trying to stay clear of generalisations while teaching the subject Religion, as well as, focusing not only on what the different religious traditions preach but how they reach their interpretations

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Arvet efter Lewi Pethrus: Om nådegåvornas ställning i svensk Pingströrelse 20172016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Utgångspunkten i jämförelsen ligger sedan i Pethrus trosgrund.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about Lilith, a demonic character from Mesopotamian mythology. She was originally described as a wind demon that caused desolation and destruction everywhere she went. According to some Jewish folklore Lilith was Adam’s first wife, though she refused to submit to him and fled to the desert. Throughout history Lilith has been given a lot of different forms and this study aims to map some of her various forms in modern time.

The purpose of this study is to look into how Lilith has been used in modern litterateur. The study will examine which forms that appear and if some are more prominent than others. In order to fulfill the purpose, a qualitative content analysis has been implemented — based on the concept of archetypes that also make up the study’s theoretical foundation.

The results show three authors’ books that focus on the usage of Lilith. The material consist of three occult and esoteric books and the result shows that Lilith has been used and presented in various ways. The main theme that all books supports is that Lilith is a mean to reclaim the female sexuality. It’s about interpretative prerogative, especially concerning strong female characters.

Kristendomskritik: En religionsfilosofisk tolkningsanalys av Friedrich Nietzsches och Sören Kierkegaards författarskap2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the criticism of Christianity expressed by Friedrich Nietzsche and Soren Kierkegaard, particularly in relation to the question of moral action. These author's work were both published in the 19th Century. To analyze their written works, a hermeneutic approach is assumed. The Concepts pf slave morality, nihilism, and the disticntion between Christendom and Christianity are emphasized in the previous research and are here used analytically to contrast the author's works.

The results of the study reveals both clear similarities and differences between Nietzsche and Kierkegaard's thought. The main difference lies in their views on the Church as an institutional doctrine and the impact of western moral principles on divine and human reason. The main similaraity is the emphasis both authors place on the individual's free will. The analysis also highlights the problematic nature of prevailing principles and the Christian image of God in the author's works. The concept of free will is seen as most central to their arguments, partilcarly in relation to wheter mankind's deire for the Christian God is rational or not.

In conclusion to the result, the study also discusses the implications pf the study for teaching about philosophy of religion in the classroom. Therefore, a discussion regarding didactics is held to suggest how this subject matter could be utilized in a teaching context, espacially to encourage critical thinking and reflection.

    Abstract [en]

In the beginning of Common Era, a number of religious texts were written recounting heavenly journey adventures. These narratives have come to constitute a recurring theme in research regarding ancient religions.

This article describes the function of these texts and the circumstances and settings in which they were composed. Most of the heavenly journey texts belong to the Jewish apocalyptic literature. During the earlier research, the heavenly journey motif was understood to be one of many elements in this literature. It was not until the later part of the 20th century that the stories of the heavenly journeys were treated as a type of their own among these texts.

Of vital importance is the status of the heavenly travelers as well as their relationships with other members of the Tradition Group considered to have authored the texts. Two main types of heavenly journeys appear in the accounts. One type has the function to providing an identity for the heavenly traveler, and the other constitutes a paradigm for the events awaiting humanity after death.

Jag fattar ingenting: Möjliga svar på omöjliga bibelställen2016Book (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Förlagets beskrivning:

Böckernas bok. Den heliga Skrift. Guds Ord.
