    Abstract [en]

    Can we create a historical timeline of disability by using works of fiction during the twentieth century?  Or rather, how do authors use society in their works of fiction, and to what extent, both positively and negatively, is this relevant to disability history? These are the fundamental questions of this essay, to examine three works of fiction in their portrayals of disabled characters, and the society they live in. The books chosen for this essay are: To Kill a Mockingbird, Forrest Gump and Of Mice and Men. The books are examined from both an internalist and externalist point of view. To determine how writers portray disabled characters, and how the treatment the disabled characters compare to the treatment of disabled people in the society the writers lived in. To better understand the subject in question, I chose to use Ervin Goffmans’ stigma theory. The earlier research I found mostly consisted of studies with another theoretical starting point, or about another form of art, mostly film. This essay concludes that the portrayal of disabled characters in the books mostly conformed to the society the writers lived in when writing the books. In other words: society had a large influence on the writers of the books. However, there were cases where the books distinctively separated from societal norms. In all these cases, the disabled characters were shown in a better light than society would allow at the time. The reason for this is difficult to pinpoint, however I discuss that it might be because the writers’ thoughts might be ahead of their time. The twentieth century regarding disability rights were in constant change, and the writers could have been influenced by the disability rights movement.

    Abstract [en]

    Traditionally, the teaching of history tends to focus on content, where historical learning is reflected in memorizing important dates, events, and concepts about the past. In recent decades, research has drawn attention to a new way of approaching historical learning through understanding causes and effects as well as making connections between different events and stories about the past. Such an approach to historical learning implies a developed capacity for historical thinking. To shed light on this, this survey aimed to investigate the interest students have in history, how they perceive the purpose of history and how they experience the content and implementation of history teaching in upper secondary school. This study is based on semi-structured focus group interviews with 12 students in upper secondary school. The focus group interviews were based on the didactic questions of what, how, and why to achieve developed and qualified answers. The outcomes of the interviews were further interpreted and analysed according to the six sub-components advocated in the Anglo-Saxon history teaching tradition to categorize students' historical thinking skills. The results revealed that students' interest in history has a major impact on how they perceive the purpose of history and how they experience the content and conduct of history teaching insecondary school. Findings also showed that using historical sources is completely excluded from students' responses. The present study forms a foundation for future studies interested in a more practical history teaching approach. Furthermore, it renders insights into the complexities of teaching history from a student perspective, while at the same time points to some opportunities for development towards the teaching practitioner in creating a good history educational plan.

    Denna undersökning behandlar gymnasielärares arbete med att möta den kulturella mångfalden som finns i den svenska skolan idag, samt hur de arbetar med elevers identitetsbildning i historieundervisningen. Lärarnas sätt att arbeta med elevers historiemedvetande är avgörande för hur de formar undervisningen till att skapa möjligheter för elever att bilda och utveckla sin identitet. I studien framställs detta i form av kvalitativa intervjuer med tre verksamma lärare. Studien syftar till att undersöka hur lärare undervisar i historia utifrån elevers olika identiteter, samt hur lärare nyttjar elevers bakgrund och berättelser i undervisningen. Uppsatsen bygger på tidigare forskning kring historiemedvetande, identitet och mångkultur. I undersökningen visas de utmaningar som lärarna ställs inför vad det gäller att tolka begreppet historiemedvetande och kunna tillämpa ett arbetssätt utifrån styrdokumenten. Detta förblir problematiskt eftersom begreppet anses som otydligt definierat i styrdokumenten. Undersökningen visar även att lärare utmanas med att möta den kulturella mångfalden som finns i det svenska samhället. Utifrån de intervjuade lärarnas beskrivningar kring sitt sätt att undervisa i historia visas en del faktorer som spelar roll i att skapa ett interkulturellt lärande och att motverka de utmaningar som dem ställs inför. Dessa faktorer kan uppfattas bero på elevernas saknade färdigheter från grundskolan och lärarnas begränsade undervisningstid, men även deras saknade färdigheter i att undervisa i ett mångkulturellt klassrum och medvetenhet kring sitt urval av ämnesstoff vars syfte är tydligt anpassat för elevers identitetsbildning. Dessa faktorer har en avgörande roll för att ett interkulturellt lärande ska tillämpas. Utifrån dessa orsaker resulterar lärarna att utmanas med att möta den kulturella mångfalden och där historieundervisningen förhåller sig till ett eurocentriskt perspektiv.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this essay is to explore the using of history in post-apocalyptic fiction. This is accom-plished by reading and analyzing Dimitrii Glukhovskii’s Metro 2033. The theoretical basis for the reading is the dialogicity of Espmark and Aronsson’s theory of using of history. It posits that the production of meaning through history is made from narratives of different lengths and shape, such as metaphors, metonymies and symbols.

    The chronotope of Bakhtin is also applied, but with Aronssons focus on its spatial component. A suggestion is made to apply it in a way that shows how the fiction can refer to, or create, an ab-stract spatial location, rather than a physical, and thereby evoking the feelings and worldviews intimately associated with the location and its time. In the reading of the text this is shown by ar-guing that Glukhovskii recreates the cold war as an abstract chronotope to legitimize his nuclear apocalypse scenario.

    The essay presents suggestions for definitions of the historical levels in the genre. These are la-beled accepted history of the present, fictive rewriting of the same, and lastly pre- or post-apoca-lyptic speculative history, depending on whether the temporal interest lies prior to or after the im-agined apocalypse. The essay exemplifies a number of ways in which the text uses history, one of which is to use the speculative history to comment on the accepted history of the present. The essay also shows that the intent of the text, the plea to humanity to stop the process of othering, is enhanced by the use of history since the historical perspective offers a retrospective continuity that strengthens the future vision.

    Using empirical data from archival research and rural fieldwork in Chipata district (former Fort Jameson district) in Zambia, this article explores historical processes shaping smallholders’ contemporary livelihood situations. Contemporary issues such as food insecurity, environmental degradation, lack of markets and inputs are investigated from a historical perspective. The article highlights colonial policies as decisive in shaping the physical, social and economic landscape of the study area. Policies such as the creation of native reserves, land alienation and European settlement, taxes and market regulations had a deep impact on smallholders’ livelihoods and are to a large extent still influencing the study area. Furthermore, it is suggested that livelihood diversification among smallholders in the study area is a contemporary expression of a historical process of semi-proletarianisation, rather than a response to postcolonial policies, which is generally suggested in the literature. Findings show that the ‘othering’ of African smallholders during the colonial period has been reproduced into present policies in the study area. Overall, the article argues that research on rural livelihoods gain from adopting a historical perspective; in understanding the long-term impact of colonial rule and in understanding of how postcolonial policies are formulated and by what impact they are implemented.

    Astrid Lindgren är en av vår tids största författare och har böcker som läses runt om i hela världen. Genom undersökning av olika artefakter som tillkommit de senaste 12 åren kan en inblick, i hur stor hon faktiskt är denna Astrid, ges. Genom att placera artefakterna i de olika kategorierna: populärkultur, utbildningskultur och minneskultur för att sedan analysera vilka historiebruk som används när det talas om Astrid framkommer i undersökningen att det framförallt är inom det existentiella historiebruket samt det lokal-ideologiska historiebruket vi finner Astrid. Astrids namn och person används för att få människor att minnas samt att locka dem till olika turistmål som visar upp Astrid och hennes många karaktärer. Samtidigt som man kan se en skillnad i framställningen av Astrid inom populärkulturen, utbildningskulturen och minneskulturen. Inom populärkulturen samt utbildningskulturen påvisar man en stark Astrid med båda fötterna på jorden, som trots möte av hinder under åren kommer ut starkare och mer rakryggad än innan och som fortsätter att hyllas trots sina inlägg i samhällsdebatten. Inom minneskulturen däremot ser man framställningen av författaren Astrid. Den Astrid vi kände till när hon levde och den Astrid vi saknar.

    Abstract [en]

    The condemnation of suicide is a historical product whose presence has been sealed throughout history. Increased liberal views on humanity and gentle penal codes led to the desecration of the unfortunate dead being strongly questioned and subsequently spared from condemning customs and practices. This study focuses on a time when suicide was decriminalized in Sweden to examine the interpretations of suicide in Swedish newspapers during the period 1864–1904. In the extension, the study intends to contribute to a nuanced theoretical discussion of the subject, which is achieved via Judith Butler’s theory of grievability. A thematic analysis could ascertain four themes – sorrow, carelessness, laconic, and dramatic – which should be understood as representations of the newspapers’, Aftonbladet and Nya dagligt allehanda, view on suicide and as stereotypes of the suicide victims. The results show that condemnatory interpretations of suicide are of a subtle nature anchored in the discourse of history and marked by contemporary class ideals. This means that whoever seeks to understand historical suicide interpretations is dependent on contextualization. However, a homogeneous suicide image does not emerge from the material. The themes demonstrate two extremes that represent each other’s opposites in the hierarchy of grief which also actualizes the question of whether suicide as an act is grievable or whether who commits the act is decisive.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay studies the use of history concerning the Swedish nineteenth century painter Ivan Aguéli. It places itself in the field of didactics of history where, in this case, the use of history on a societal scale is being analyzed. With the theoretic typology of Klas-Göran Karlsson both the interests, needs and functions of the use of Aguéli can be illuminated and compared. The groups of people that use the memory of Aguéli in the Swedish culture of history are very broad. To sort these out, the essay borrows the theoretical framework stemmed from Jörn Rüsen and applied by Anders Dybelius. Using this analytical typology of the educational, popular, and commemorative spheres, the journey of Aguéli’s memory in Sweden between 1920 and 2020 can be illuminated and understood.

    The empirical material is very broad and includes, among others, novels, exhibitions, a rock band, a museum, biographies, and newspapers. Regarding the theoretical typologies in the essay, a deductive method is used to sort these artifacts in their relation to their abode.

    Ivan Aguéli was introduced in the Swedish historical culture after his death. He is remembered mainly as one of the great Swedish modernist landscape-painters, and his extravagant personality and bohemian lifestyle has made him an object of both reverence and wonderment. But why has this person been used and remembered in this way? Ivan Aguéli has often been described as a mystery. This is the one main quality that has followed his memory through the millennia, disregarding which group has been using it. This study points out that the refusal to un-mystify Aguéli has kept his memory in the style of a “bottomless well”, where different groups and individuals has been able to pick up quality’s that answer to their own particular interests and needs. This “bottomless well” contains a flurry of positive characteristics and has something that is appealing for everyone: what’s not to like?

    Ivan Aguéli is more popular today than ever before. His legacy as an artist is getting challenged when much of his metaphysical, political, and philosophical legacy becomes accessible through translation from French and Arabic into Swedish. Aguéli’s theories of the correlation between religious truths and the political organization of society answers to an increased need for both political and spiritual renewal. This fact makes this essay, and the use of Ivan Aguéli’s memory, an example of how history is being produced and used as a tool to aid man in her aspirations.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to examine how women and men were portrayed in the campaigns surrounding the Swedish referendum 1922, regarding a ban of alcohol.  To examine this, eleven political posters belonging to the pro-ban and anti-ban side have been analyzed from a gender perspective. The chosen posters all contained illustrations of people and were created for the campaigns surrounding the referendum. The aim is to compare how women and men were portrayed and what they represented, as well as which gender norms can be seen in the illustrations. 

    The method used is an image analysis of the illustrations combined with a text analysis of the slogans, and the theoretical framework used is Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of gender systems.

    The result showed that there is a large difference between how women and men are depicted, mainly regarding which roles the people I the depictions had based on their gender. This was to some degree dependent on the side that created the poster, but some similarities were seen on both sides. The pro-ban side used more depictions of women in their campaign, and the anti-ban side contained far fewer illustrations of women. On both sides the women were mainly portrayed as mothers and wives caring for the home and children, and the woman is always depicted in a positive way. Both sides commonly used illustrations of men, but their roles were more varied. On the pro-ban side, the man was often portrayed as a drunkard, and on the anti-ban side he is both the addict and the fighter for freedom.

    The image of Islam

    A historiographical study of Islam in Swedish research.

    A society`s image of a foreign people, culture and religion changes constantly depending on social, political and other important events. Today Islam is the second largest religion in Sweden after Christianity and that is why it has become important to study the Swedish image of Islam, Muhammed and the Islamic world during the last century. This study is a historiographical and examines the work of six different Swedish authors between the year 1918 to 1930 and 1979 to 2011. The aim of studying these works is to examine whether there has been changes in the Swedish view of Islam, Muhammed and Muslim societies. The theoretical starting point of this study is based on the economist Amartya Sen`s view on identity as multidimensional. According to Sen, a too strong emphasis on ethnic, cultural and religious identities tends to create antagonism and conflicts between different group of peoples. That is why, according to Sen, it is important to emphasize the similarities between different cultures instead of only focus on their differences. Also, Samual P. Huntington`s thesis that emphasizes the differences between religious civilizations in the world who struggle for power and influence is used in this study. The investigation shows that there are differences between the authors from 1918 to 1930 and 1979 to 2011 in their description of Islam, Muhammed and Muslim societies. While the older authors focus mostly on Islam`s past, the contemporary authors deal mostly with Islam in present times. The investigation also demonstrates that the older authors in general give a positive description of Islam`s earlier history, while they depict Islam and Muslim societies as stagnant and reactionary in modern times. The result confirms earlier studies who show similar tendencies on description of Islamic and other Non-Western societies.

    This quotation helps identify one reason for integrating ideas about knowledge management with concepts from Anthony Giddens structuration theory in the theoretical framework that I use as an analytical tool in this research. Structuration theory concerns itself with the “social forces that influence our lives” and these forces interest me. In the same article Giddens continuous: ”We live in a world of quite dramatic change…There are three major sets of changes happening in contemporary societies and it is the task of sociology to analyze what they mean for our lives today. First there is globalisation….The second big influence is that of technological change. Information technology is altering many of the ways in which we work and in which we live. The nature of the jobs people do, for example, has been transformed….The third fundamental set of changes is in our everyday lives. Our lives are structured less by the past than by our anticipated future”.

     

    In this paper I agure that there is a continous structuring going on in society. I therefore concern myself with a pair of twin concepts that are interrelated. The first one is knowledge structuring; the second is knowledge domination. These two concepts are of vital importance when trying to understand, assess and monitor implications of transformations of work processes and tools at work.

    This chapter takes the Swedish Committee for People with Limited Work Ability, appointed in 1943 by the Swedish government, as a starting point to provide a close reading of widespread political stances on labour and disability during the post-war period. It analyses the committee's understanding of the mechanisms of the free market and the consequences of this for people with disabilities, which is seen in relation to an expanding welfare state. The liberal idea of encouraging self-help had long been an important part of the Swedish system that surrounded people with disabilities. Integrating people into the workforce was thus seen as a cornerstone of Swedish society and this was also expressed by the committee that was appointed to address these issues.

    This study aims to show how the image of the Sami has changed during 1868-1954 by studying what Swedish textbooks have highlighted about the Sami. Furthermore, this study compares the image of the Sami to the image of Non-European nomads to show the relationship between these images but also how they change during the period. The study uses the theory of image that Kenneth Nyberg formulates in his thesis. Every description and valuation in the textbooks are considered, the stereotypical and elementary as well as the elaborated and complex. Specific descriptions and valuations that are highly valued are those concerning, family relations, characteristics, relations with other cultures, and the relation with nature. The result of this study shows that the image of the Sami and of the Non-European nomads have similarities between each other that are lasting over time. The study also shows that the image of the Sami is more elaborated and that they are portrayed in a friendlier way than Non-European nomads.

    The purpose of this study is to compare how pre-service teacher students describe historical consciousness, concerning if they are studying their first or last history course. The concept historical consciousness was chosen because of its central role in the Swedish curriculum for the history subject. To achieve the study’s purpose eight pre-service teacherswere qualitatively interviewed. Five of the eight students studied their first history course, while the remaining three studied their last history course. The two theories that made up the theoretical framework of the study was Rüsen’s three principles for narrative competence as well as Jensen’s five processes of historical consciousness. The result of the studyshows that a clear majority of the students described historical consciousness as a method of learning from historical mistakes. This trend was clear with both groups of students. This study also shows that a majority of students had difficulties with the future’s role in historical consciousness. One out of the eight students made clear and continuous references between the three tenses past, present and future. The result reveal that the teacher education should focus more on the three tenses past, present, and future in relation to practical teaching situations. This to make historical consciousness more practical for the student teachers.

    This C-essay investigates how the small farming municipality of Hakarp, Sweden, could go from a traditional farming community to an industrialized community during the latter half of the 19th century. Natural resources, relatively close proximity to communications through waterways and main roads in combination with individual investors and popular demand for goods are factors that contributed to why this particular municipality became industrialized. The farming community ceased to develop and towards the last decade of the 19th century many farms were left abandoned and fields unploughed. Why this happened is not clear, but a probable cause is the centralization due to industrialization and the building of railroads, that led people to move away from the countryside.

    Under den senare delen av 1500-talet förändrades kyrko- och fromhetslivet i stora delar av Europa i takt med den nya tidens reformatoriska anda. Bekännelser formulerades, kyrkobyggnader omdanades, gudstjänstlivet reformerades och den folkliga moralen blev föremål för en disciplineringsprocess. Så var även fallet i Skara stift.

    Under denna tid hade stiftet fyra stiftschefer som hette Erik. De fyra Erikarnas samlade ämbetstid (1545-1570) inföll mellan två ofta omtalade perioder: efter den tidiga reformationsfasen då kyrkan i Sverige underordnades den världsliga makten och före den katolicerande kyrkopolitiska utvecklingen under Johan III:s regim.

    I denna studie undersöks hur Florence Nightingale framställs i biografier. Tre biografier har valts om Florence skrivna av olika författare, dessa är utgivna 1952, 1990 och 2007. För att besvara syftet och frågeställningarna valdes en kvalitativ innehållsanalys och en tematisering gjordes. Temana var administratör, sjuksköterska och politiker. Syftet var att undersöka hur Florence framställts utifrån dessa teman samt se hur framställningen har förändrats över tid.

    Resultatet visar på att Florence framställts som en ung kvinna som inte passar in i tillvaron och kämpar mot både sig själv, sin familj och sina omständigheter för rätten att själv välja sin väg. Biden av henne förändras och man möter kvinnan som tjänstgör på fältsjukhusen på Skutari och här presenteras bilden av en stark kvinna med skin på näsan som vet vad hon vill. Den sista bilden av Florence är den efter hemkomsten när hon ägnar resten av sitt liv med att reformera och förändra samhället och det är en ytterst målmedveten kvinna läsaren möter.

    Framställningen av Florence Nightingale har förändrats vad gäller innehåll och vilket utrymme dessa ges. Förändringen ligger även i att senare författare utgår mer från olika teman för att närma sig Florence. Det finns en tydligare agenda bakom senare författare som att Moberg gärna vill lyfta fram Florence som en av tidens föregångare i kvinnokampen.

    Is family history research always life-changing and sensational? Or is there something significant in the banal that the participants in this study reported? This study aims to explore the spectrum of experiences of family history research, focusing specifically on the banal. I argue that it is in examining the banal everyday motivations, experiences, and findings that a greater understanding of how the average individual negotiates and builds meaning through their use of cultural heritage, family history, and the past. The everyday banal is what is reproduced and remains after the effervescence fades away and the normal redundancy in traditional society continues. The banal withstands the sands of time and effectively (re)produces narratives and binary tropes of identity and the past. This study examines the narratives collected from semi-structured interviews with seven participants from two Swedish non-formal courses in family history research. These narratives are important as they reveal participants’ engagement with historical consciousness and the relationship between the past, present and future. Moreover, the stories they tell are significant in revealing that participants learn family history research for numerous reasons, including “something to do” alongside those who wish to have a deeper historical understanding. Family history research is a collective and collaborative activity despite the individualised nature of focusing on one’s ancestors. Participants’ research led to discoveries that were not always revolutionary, reinforcing, for example, banal traits seen in themselves and banal activities they carry out today. This study found that while the reasons for participation, the act of attending class, and participants’ research may not necessarily result in the extraordinary–thieves or kings–for these individuals participating in family history research, the banal reasoning and banal results are significant.

    Family history research, in its many forms, remains one of the most popular pastimes for individuals across the globe. Technological advancements and increased digitalisation have made the past more accessible than ever. It is not uncommon for individuals to travel virtually and physically across temporalities and spaces. With greater accessibility, there is a broader range of cultures, social categories, identities, and narratives, triggering questions of belonging, identity, and purpose. How do individuals negotiate the increasingly varied representations of the past and identity, and how does family history research contribute to this process of knowledge and understanding?

    Family history research places the internal self and external impetus in juxtaposition through pedagogical hinges, constructing opportunities for participants to engage in knowledge-in-the-making. This study explicitly emphasises the process of knowledge rather than its product, reflecting the concept of Bildung and engaging a hermeneutic phenomenological perspective. Focusing on Swedish and participant perspectives, I investigate three cases: Swedish family history television series, Allt för Sverige’s previous contestants, results from four genetic ancestry testing companies, and two non-formal family history courses’ participants. Methods include semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, participant observation, and reflexive thematic analysis. The thesis synthesises the results to investigate how experiences depict narratives of the past and identity, how participants engage with these representations and identify pedagogical hinges enabling transitional spaces for knowledge construction.

    This presentation focuses on the third study. Results reveal that course participants engage actively with family history research, enriching historical consciousness, empathy, and construction of historical significance. Participants are not a homogenous group and cite various motivations and reactions to their research experiences, from something to do while their husband plays golf or when it is cold outside to searching for an adoptee’s biological family. Assessment of the participants’ negotiations with narratives reveals multiple pedagogical hinges and exposes the permeable and dynamic edges of traditional boundaries and binaries such as self/other and private/public. Moreover, the results emphasise that the significance of family history research for participants is found equally in the everyday banal and effervescent.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines how historiography has portraited the planning of the Holocaust. This has benn carried out with the support of a qualitative text alalysis as a method. The study has its starting point in how different historians have attributed the role of the Wannsee Conference. The reasearch's theoretical approach is based on concepts about modernity and conceptual analyzers about rationality, bureaucracy and industrialization. These concepts have been used as analysis tools in order to contrast historians' conlusions. 

    The result shows that there are several intrepretations about the significance of the Wannsee Conference. Several histrians agree that the Wannsee Conference can be considered a clear turning point. This is because the violent persecution of the legal population will increase after the conference takes place. However, other historians belive that there were several decisive fators in the war that led to what became the Holocaust. Much indicates that it was a bureaucratic mess within the Nazi elite, while several historians point out that the Holocaust will grow out of the war. The reulst clearly has shown how historians have problematized structures as casual axplanations, rather than discussing the role of Adolf Hitler, as previous reasearch has stated was one of the main areas in early historiography. The Holocaust became a means of how the Nazis feared to be defeated in the war, Finally, a discussion regarding didactics has also been held about how this subject ahould be utilized in a teaching context.

    During the 19th century, the Swedish society implemented a new criminal law which made homosexual

    acts punishable with hard labour for up to two years. What’s even more notably is that the penal formulation

    equated these homosexual acts with bestiality. Contemporary with this implementation, an academic

    man named Pontus Wikner lived. Professor of philosophy, married to a girl named Ida and with

    two baby boys he carried a huge secret with him for his entire life - he was a homosexual.

    The purpose of the study was to figure out how Pontus Wikners self-image as a homosexual was in his

    lifetime in relation to the current laws and norms within the society, but also in relation to topics such

    as personal beliefs and his close relations. In order to fulfil the purpose, a qualitative, micro historic

    study has been implemented - with a thematic structure in order to answer the questions.

    What emerged as the study took shape was that Pontus Wikner did by no means life a simple or nonproblematic

    life. In the public sphere he was an highly regarded academic within the area of philosophy

    and religious philosophy. In the private sphere, Wikner lived a different life. In his confessions and diares,

    Wikner told the story that not many knew about his life in the private sphere. These writings were

    given out posthumously, and told the story of Wikners hidden life. Wikners self-image as a homosexual

    seems to be pretty clear. Never did Wikner feel as much love as he did in his close relations with other

    men. It was within these relations that he found himself dearly happy. His writings showed an internal

    struggle of large proportions.

    In relations to current theories wihtin masculinity and queer theory, the analysis has lit an old problem

    with new perspectives. The definition of homosexuality as we know it today did not yet exist, therefor

    the concept of queer and masculinity helped to show how Pontus Wikner was not only a homosexual.

    He was also in some definitions a queer persona as he showed a deep insight within his confessions and

    diaries with his own problems, but also a will to help, guide and protect his peers within the society to

    give them a more worthy life than he lived.

    The chapter builds on a longitudinal study of two family-owned Swedish pulp and paper firms: MoDo and Korsnäs. Drawing on the concept of "family firm identity" we investigate how the character of the two firms as family businesses has been sustained over generations and through changes in the firms' startegies and business contexts. We conclude that the concept of family firm identity needs to be applied in a differentiated manner in order to capture the reality of family busineeses. Based on our cases we identify three dimensions along which family firm identity differs: 1) explicit vs. implicit family firm identity, 2) owbership vs. management oriented family firm identity and 3) general vs. specific family firm identity.

    Historical events often carry an air of uncertainty, like a fog that veils their boundaries. Questions arise about when the historical process leading to a coup d’état, or in the case examined in this book, an attempted coup, truly begins. How is it orchestrated? What delineates its scope? Who are the involved actors, and what fields of study and knowledge are essential for comprehending it?

    This book delves into the attempted coup that transpired on January 8, 2023, in Brasilia, Brazil, following the defeat of Jair Bolsonaro and the inauguration of his successor, President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva. On that day, thousands of extremist Bolsonaro supporters invaded, sacked, and vandalized federal government buildings in Brasília with the aim of inciting a military coup against the Lula da Silva government and reinstating Jair Bolsonaro as the president of Brazil.

    The essays and artistic interventions in this collection aim to unravel the various dimensions of this pivotal event. They discuss the origins, occurrence, and aftermath of anti-democratic Bolsonarist mobilizations, with a specific focus on the communicative and symbolic aspects of this historical occurrence.
