Empowerment through Entrepreneurship: A tool for integration among immigrant women?2009Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The study investigates whether entrepreneurship among immigrant women in Sweden may be a way to achieve integration in working life and thereby increase their empowerment. Sixteen female entrepreneurs were interviewed. They started their businesses for a number of reasons: unemployment, lack of suitable jobs and career possibilities, discrimination and forced privatization, desire for personal development, independence and freedom, or work within one’s own field of interest. We conclude that entrepreneurship can be a tool for increasing empowerment among educated immigrant women.

Isaberg on the edge to future by controlling the lack of snow2009Ingår i: Presented at The international Symposium on Entrepreneurship in Tourism, Rovaniemi, Finland, March 17-21, 2009., 2009Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is a descriptive examination and assessment of a ski resort in southern Sweden – Isaberg. The paper describes an emerging threat most ski resorts are faced with today and in the future – the lack of snow. In many countries financial institutions are much less willing to offer funding for investments in ski resorts under certain heights. This is the result of two trends:  the cut off point for the height of the ski resorts is increasing every year, and at the same time some resorts have fewer skiers.  The likelihood of snow and the ability to offer snow-related products are critical to the success of all ski resorts.  Isaberg, which is significantly below any proposed height cut off points, has strong traditions, a promising market with skiers coming from the domestic Swedish market, as well as Norway, Denmark, Germany and Holland, and very modern facilities – but in recent years the resort has been suffering because of the lack of snow. Isaberg is therefore considering building an inside skiing facility to attract customers and support other local products. Our paper examines the potential of this facility and offers practical and theoretical implications for ski resort management.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The city and high-tech startups: The spatial organization of Schumpeterian entrepreneurship2019Ingår i: Cities, ISSN 0264-2751, E-ISSN 1873-6084, Vol. 87, nr April, s. 121-130Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Research on Schumpeterian entrepreneurship identifies new high-growth startup companies as key factors in technological innovation and economic growth. While economists have tended to focus on high-growth, high-tech startup firms as the unit of analysis, economic geographers and urbanists have examined the geographic dimensions of entrepreneurship, particularly the rise of entrepreneurial clusters and eco systems. We focus here on a particular type of Schumpeterian entrepreneurship associated with high-tech startup companies, or what we refer to as “tech-startup entrepreneurship.” We contend that the organization of such Schumpeterian entrepreneurship occurs at two spatial scales. At the macro-geographic level, it is highly clustered and concentrated in a relatively small number of global cities or metro areas. At the micro-geographic level, it is highly concentrated in distinct districts or micro-clusters within these leading cities and metro areas. To examine the geographic dimensions of tech-startup entrepreneurship across these spatial scales, we use previously unused data on venture capital-financed startups at the metropolitan and district levels. Our findings support the hypothesis that tech-startup entrepreneurship is organized across two distinct but related spatial scales, which act on entrepreneurial activity through different mechanisms. These findings suggest that local diversity and local specialization can simultaneously potentiate innovation, and that a multi-scalar approach to the geography of entrepreneurship is prudent.

The economic microgeography of diversity and specialization externalities – firm-level evidence from Swedish cities2019Ingår i: Research Policy, ISSN 0048-7333, E-ISSN 1873-7625, Vol. 48, nr 6, s. 1385-1398Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We employ finely geo-coded firm-level panel data to assess the long-standing question whether agglomeration economies derive from specialization (within-industry), diversity (between-industry) or overall density. Rather than treating the city as a single unit, we focus our analysis on how the inner industry structures of cities influence firm-level productivity. Our results illustrate the co-existence of several externalities that differ in their spatial distribution and attenuation within cities. First, we find robust positive effects of neighborhood-level specialization on TFP as well as a small effect of diversity at the same fine spatial level. These effects are highly localized and dissipate beyond the immediate within-city neighborhood level. Second, we also find that firms benefit from the overall density of the wider city. The results emphasize the relevance of “opening up” cities to study the workings of their inner organization and support the idea that location in a within-city industry cluster in a diversified and dense city boosts productivity.

    Abstract [en]

A focus on constructing regional advantage requires an 'unpacking' of what makes territorial agglomerations important for innovation and competitiveness by disclosing and revealing the contingencies, particularities and specificities of the various contexts and environments where knowledge creation, innovation and entrepreneurship take place. In order to achieve more effective regional innovation policy, this paper presents and discusses three dimensions along which such unpacking can take place. These dimensions refer to (1) specific industrial knowledge bases, (2) globally distributed knowledge networks and (3) different territorial competence bases.

A focus on constructing regional advantage requires an unpacking of what makes territorial agglomerations important for innovation and growth by disclosing and revealing the contingencies, particularities and specificities of the various contexts and environments where knowledge creation, innovation and entrepreneurship take place. In order to achieve more effective regional innovation policy, the paper presents and discusses five dimensions along which such unpacking can take place. These dimensions refer to different perspectives that originate in different industrial knowledge bases, different territorial competence bases, the distributed knowledge base, the importance of creative knowledge environments and different institutional frameworks.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role played by built heritages and cultural environments, alongside other locational factors, in explaining the growth of human capital in Sweden. We distinguish between urban, natural and cultural qualities as different sources of regional attractiveness and estimate their influence on the observed growth of individuals with at least three years of higher education during 2001–2010. Neighborhood-level data are used, and unobserved heterogeneity and spatial dependencies are modeled by employing random effects estimations and an instrumental variable approach. Our findings indicate that the local supply of built heritages and cultural environments explain a significant part of human capital growth in Sweden. Results suggest that these types of cultural heritages are important place-based resources with a potential to contribute to improved regional attractiveness and growth.

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes how patterns of industrial clustering arise with respect to the size of an initial firm when measured in terms of innovation. Through principles of evolutionary economics, the aim of this paper is to examine the ’birth’ of industrial clusters. We take an endogenous and supply-side approach, where firms in a region spawn from incumbents. Technology is qualitatively described using a code set mapped on a cognitive space. Assuming inheritability of networking skills, we seek to model how the size of an initial firm influences future patterns of cluster formation through a model of technical cognition and a mimicking of creativity. It is found that initial firm size has a lasting impact on clustering patterns through its influence on the level of cognitive distance of the underlying agents. The model replicates the stylised facts of entrepreneurial cluster formation.

Whose reality counts?: Critical junctures in livelihood trajectories under deforestation2017Ingår i: Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie, ISSN 0040-747X, E-ISSN 1467-9663, Vol. 108, nr 5, s. 540-553Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Livelihoods approaches focus on the poor and their knowledge and agency, but risk underplaying broader contextual forces which constrain and shape that agency. Livelihood trajectories approaches attend more fully to these structural, contextual dynamics. A three-year study using quantitative and qualitative methods investigated livelihood trajectories over two decades in a village affected by deforestation in Northeast Cambodia, and sought to identify critical junctures structuring those trajectories. A timber rush, a land rush, a turn to agriculture and ongoing competition to shape post-forest reterritorialisation were identified as the critical junctures. These transformed the physical environment, and initiated waves of migration which in turn transformed the social and economic structure and everyday life of the village. This valuably disrupts narrative simplifications associated with community forestry. The junctures furthermore suggest an analytical framework for understanding deforestation-livelihoods dynamics in other contexts, thus demonstrating how livelihood trajectories research might contribute to middle-level theory building.

Nodes, networks and proximities: On the knowledge dynamics of the Medicon Valley biotech cluster2004Ingår i: European Planning Studies, ISSN 0965-4313, E-ISSN 1469-5944, Vol. 12, nr 7, s. 1003-1018Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Empirical research on the knowledge dynamics of biotechnology demonstrates a dual local-global knowledge flow pattern. The sector is characterised by strong spatial concentration around nodes of excellence that are interconnected through a global network. This requires a specification of the notion of proximity as a facilitator of learning processes which emphasises its multifaceted configuration. This study highlights the significance of relational proximity within epistemic communities shaping innovation processes across multi-spatial scales. These arguments are illustrated with a database-survey on collaboration in scientific publication by 109 biotechnology firms in the Danish-Swedish life-science cluster Medicon Valley.

Spillover effects when IKEA enters: Do incumbent retailers win or lose?2019Ingår i: Papers in regional science (Print), ISSN 1056-8190, E-ISSN 1435-5957, Vol. 98, nr 6, s. 2295-2313Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the effects of IKEA entry in three Swedish municipalities, finding that revenues for incumbent retailers located 1 km from the new IKEA store experienced a 7% increase due to positive spillover. The effect was insignificant for retailers located in city centres or more than 1 km from IKEA. Moreover, the positive agglomeration effects only dominate the negative competition effects for stores that sell complementary products, while same-market retailers located between 2 and 5 km from the new IKEA store experienced revenue loss due to IKEA entry. In contrast to retail revenues, the effects on employment were statistically insignificant.

    What happens when IKEA comes to town?2017Ingår i: Regional studies, ISSN 0034-3404, E-ISSN 1360-0591, Vol. 51, nr 2, s. 313-323Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The effects of a new IKEA store on retail revenues, employment and inflow of purchasing power in the entry municipalities as well as in neighbouring municipalities were investigated using data from 2000–11. A propensity score-matching method was used to find non-IKEA entry municipalities that were as similar as possible to the entry municipalities based on the situation before entry. The results indicate that IKEA entry increased entry municipality durable goods revenues by about 20% and employment by about 17%. Only small and, in most cases, statistically insignificant effects were found in neighbouring municipalities.

Inclusive Education for Refugees and Asylum Seeking Children: A Systematic Literature Review2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of children with a refugee background in the Netherlands. All of these children who are under 18 years of age must go to school, but they face many barriers towards inclusion. Appropriately educating this diverse group of children presents schools with challenges. Supportive programs are needed to overcome these barriers and challenges. AIM The aim of this paper was to explore what supports are put in place to foster refugee students’ inclusion in school. METHOD A systematic literature review was conducted to synthesize research on school-based programs and practices. RESULTS A broad range of supports were identified. Most studies addressed access barriers to learning by offering emotional and educational support, while fewer studies focused on opportunity barriers such as negative attitudes and lack of parental involvement. CONCLUSION It was concluded that schools can play an important role in supporting the inclusion of refugee children and their families because of their accessibility, but that more high quality research is necessary in order to assess the effectiveness of supports that minimize barriers towards learning and promote their inclusion in school.

Determinants of Net Migration to Rural Areas, and the Impacts of Migration on Rural Labour Markets and Self-Employment in Rural Sweden2015Ingår i: European Planning Studies, ISSN 0965-4313, E-ISSN 1469-5944, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 693-709Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Across most of Europe, the countryside seems to show a polarized development in which large districts are depopulating, while certain areas, mainly around big- and mid-sized cities, are increasing in population. The latter development is often described in concepts of “rural gentrification” and “rurbanization”, symbolizing a transformation of rural communities to communities with urban values and lifestyles. Most studies of the effects of these processes have focused on social and cultural consequences, as e.g. the displacements of lower-income households with higher-income residents and of rural culture and values with urban ones. This paper examines the phenomenon from another perspective, namely the effects of the “rurbanization” processes on countryside’s labour markets and economic life. This paper aims at analysing the determinants of net migration to rural areas in general and to different types of regions, and the impacts of inmigration on rural labour markets, self-employment and other socio-economic conditions in Sweden for the period of 2003–2005. We find that net migration into rural areas increases with the size of adjacent local and regional centres, whereas net migration decreases with the average commuting distance of workers in the rural areas. When comparing in-migrants to rural areas with rural area stayers, our results indicate that the former has lower incomes, a lower employment ratio and a lower degree of entrepreneurial activities. These differences could—at least partly—be explained by the fact that rural area stayers were on average 6 years older than rural area inmigrants, i.e. the two groups were in different stages of their life cycles.

    Abstract [en]

China has moved a long way in economic and industrial development during the last decades and has developed into a global player in many industries. With increased knowledge in high-technology industries, China has ambitions to move into sectors that necessitate a high level of research and development, such as the aerospace industry. China is now in the process of establishing a modern aircraft industry based on domestic efforts as well as agreements with foreign partners in the manufacturing of complete aircraft. This paper analyzes what measures have been taken by Airbus in the form of technology transfer and other supportive measures to strengthen its position in the Chinese market. The findings conclude that Airbus’ transfer should be looked upon as a broad spectrum of technology and knowledge transfer, which include aircraft manufacturing technology, as well as cabin crew training centre, establishment of a warehouse and suppliers ”village”, an engineering centre, maintenance and various service functions.

    Abstract [en]

The paper investigates in what way and to what extent Taiwan has been able to develop a commercial aerospace industry and the formation of an internationally competitive supplier system, i.e. high-tech cluster. The development of such an industry has been much more difficult than expected. Since the late 1990s there have been signs that a supplier system is under development, but there are great challenges ahead, amid a fierce international competition.

    Abstract [en]

South Korea and Taiwan are two of the most prominent examples of newly industrializing economies which have been remarkably successful during the last three decades. This paper gives an overview of South Koreas’s and Taiwan’s development and innovation policies, and compare between these two economies’ main strengths and weaknesses regarding innovation and technology. Conclusions drawn show that there are similiarities as well as differences in the innovation systems in the two economies. The role of the state has been fundamental in South Korea’s and Taiwan’s economic and industrial development. In South Korea there has been very strong ties between the chaebols and the state. The chaebols have been the greatest strenght of Korea’s innovation system, while the there is a lack of interplay between universities and the private sector. The role of the state in Taiwan has concentraded more on creating supporting institutions that have focused on building human resources, acquiring technology from abroad, creating science and technology capacities. In Taiwan it seems that there are more developed mechanisms to transfer research results from public research establishments to the industry, especially SMEs. The industrial policy in Taiwan has supported a rather close cooperation between industry and the state and increased connection between universities and the state. The weakest links seem to be between universities and the industry.
