Balancing walled garden and open platform approaches for the Internet of Things: A case study of Husqvarna Group2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The term “Internet of Things” (IoT) was first introduced by a technology pioneer Kevin Ashton in 1999.Although the term is relatively new, the idea of making networks and computers communicate in order totrack and manage devices has been around for many years. As of now IoT is a rising topic in technicalcommunity. Some specialists are anticipating that by 2025 there will be around 100 billion connected IoTdevices with a worldwide economic impact of more than $11 trillion. On the other hand, Internet of Thingsemerges significant challenges. Currently the organization around world use two main approaches whenentering the IoT market. First one is an open platform and is represented by interoperability andcollaboration with devices from different vendors. Second one is a closed platform, or a “walled garden”approach. A “walled garden” approach is characterized by building “fences” around the user. In other words, the service provider has control over applications, content and media and also restricts the non-approvedcontent to reach the customer. Therefore, the research set out to explore these approaches and show thebenefits and limits they can have on an organization. The research was conducted in collaboration with aSwedish manufacturer of outdoor power products called Husqvarna Group. In order to fully acknowledgethe organization’s approach, 4 interviews were conducted with managers, back end developers andconsultants hired by Husqvarna Group. From the findings, some things should be taken in consideration.First, IoT involves big data being collected, therefore security and privacy are crucial when developingdevices and systems. Second, it is essential for an organization to have the same views when taking a newdirection. Third, when discussing Internet of Things, it means that things connect, devices to sensors, sensor to gateways and gateways to system. And there shouldn’t be a delimitation from a vendor to another. Therefore, open platform approach is seen as the way to diversity and innovation.

Customer Maturity Analysis Tool: A case study in designing a Customer MaturityAnalysis Tool2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The IT consultancy industry is characterized by knowledge intensive implementationprojects related to varying levels of standardized information system software. When faced with a large implementation project at a previously unknown customer various assessmentsis usually conducted to identify the level of fit between the software and organizationin order to plan and structure the implementation process. However, there are several aspects of the customer organization that potentially can affect the end result as well as the implementation process that is unrelated to the fit between the software and the implementation organization as well as the potency of the implementation method. By conducting measurements of these maturity factors within the customer organization the implementing procedure can be modified based on the customer maturity level in order to become more aligned with the capabilities present in the customer organization.

Research question: Which aspects need to be covered by a Customer Maturity Analysis Tool (CMAT) in order to evaluate the pre implementation maturity for potential customersof our case company and how should these aspects be organized and measured? The first task of the research process was to create an underlying model of maturity perspectives and aspects to structure the literature review as well as the empirical data collection. It was decided to adhere to a deductive approach where the theoretical model would be validated and if necessary modified in accordance to feedback from potential users of the CMAT within the case company. This procedure was repeated in the creation of measurements and maturity levels for the aspects to be used in the tool. The research process would therefore transition from a general model based on literature review, through a iterative feedback loop to a final model tailored to the specific requirementsof the case company. The final CMAT ended up containing four main perspectives of customer maturity; ITi nfrastructure, Culture, Process and Business Governance. These four perspectives were in turn divided into subgroups in order to be able to aggregate and compare differentaspects of the perspectives with each other.

Effects of Visualizing Missing Data: An Empirical Evaluation2014Inngår i: 18th International Conference on Information Visualisation (IV) / [ed] Ebad Banissi, Mark W. McK. Bannatyne, Francis T. Marchese, Muhammad Sarfraz, Anna Ursyn, Gilles Venturini, Theodor G. Wyeld, Urska Cvek, Marjan Trutschl, Georges Grinstein, Vladimir Geroimenko, Sarah Kenderdine & Fatma Bouali, IEEE conference proceedings , 2014, s. 132-138Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an empirical study that evaluates the effects of visualizing missing data on decision-making tasks. A comparison between three visualization techniques: (1) emptiness, (2) fuzziness, and (3) emptiness plus explanation, revealed that the latter technique induced significantly higher degree of decision-confidence than the visualization technique fuzziness. Moreover, emptiness plus explanation yield the highest number of risky choices of the three. This result suggests that uncertainty visualization techniques affect the decision-maker and the decisionconfidence. Additionally, the results indicate a possible relation between the degree of decision-confidence and the decision-maker's displayed risk behavior.

Guidelines for ITIL Implementation: A Framework for IT Service Management2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is the most popular andthe influential framework for IT Service Management (ITSM). It is used for ITgovernance, management and control of IT services. It comprises of definedand best practices, developed in 1980’s by British Government Central ComputerTelecommunication Agency. The purpose of this thesis is to present theguidelines to implement ITIL. Available literature on ITIL discusses the importanceof ITIL, its benefits, facilitating and challenging factors associatedwith implementation. But the steps to implement ITIL have so far not beendiscussed. We take the opportunity to explore empirical data from industry andliterature to get to know different strategies and approaches used by IT professionalsfor implementing the ITIL framework. To fulfil the purpose, we stated three research questions: “What are facilitatingfactors for the ITIL Implementation?”, “What are the challenging factors forthe ITIL Implementation?”, and “Based on facilitating factors and barriers, what are the guidelines for a successful ITIL implementation?”. Literature wasreviewed to extract required factors and senior IT professionals from two organisationswere interviewed to get to know what factors had been facilitators and barriers for them. The extracted factors were compiled, grouped and analysedto develop implementation steps. The result of this thesis is a framework developed implementation steps, which any organisation can use as guidelineto adapt ITIL framework. These steps consist of four phases highlighting significantfactors needed for the successful implementation. Among the highlighted factors were top management support, ITIL skills of implementer, resistanceto change, financial support, staff training, process mapping, documentation, project management and governance are the most important factors which influence the implementation process.

Mobile Apps and the ultimate addiction to the Smartphone: A comprehensive study on the consequences of society’s mobile needs2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The smartphone is omnipresent and is cherished and held close by people. It allows for constant connection within a digitally connected society, as well as for many other purposes such as leisure activity or informational purpose. Within the Information Systems studies deeper investigation is required as to what impact this “taken – for – granted” mobile access to information and mobile apps has for individuals and society and if a “technological addiction”can be developed when using the smartphone for everything during the day on such a constant basis.

The aim of this study was to understand the role of the smartphone in society and to shed light on this unclear relationship between the constant use of a smartphone and its development towards an addictive quality. To reach a conclusion, in depth – interviews were conducted with participants about their relationship to the smartphone and their smartphone use based on questions derived from literature on mobile communication technologies and the types of digital addictions existing.

The results are that the smartphone is a device that seamlessly integrates into our daily lives in that we unconsciously use it as a tool to make our daily tasks more manageable, and enjoyable. It also supports us in getting better organized, to be in constant touch with family and friends remotely, and to be more mobile which is a useful ability in today’s mobility driven society.

Smartphones have been found to inhabit a relatively low potential to addiction. Traits of voluntary behaviour, habitual behaviour, and mandatory behaviour of smartphone use have been found. All of these behaviours are not considered a true addiction. In the end, it seems that the increase of smartphone use is mainly due to the way we communicate nowadays digitally, and the shift in how we relate to our social peers using digital means.

Web-based ERP Systems: With a focus on SMEs2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Web-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems deployed through theSoftware-as-a-Service (SaaS) model are a major disruptive technology in the fieldof ERP systems. The defining features of the SaaS are that they are hosted remotelyand are completely used through the web; they are subscription-payment basedand they operate on a multi-tenant fashion. This technological innovation redefinestraditional technical and economic ERP paradigms.

This Bachelor’s thesis aims through interviews with vendors, users and consultants,as well as by researching various academical and professional publications onthe subject of Web-based (SaaS) ERPs to study these pehomena, and produce a listof their benefits to SMEs. It also analyses their opportunities and challenges via anumber of interesting facts, thus allowing for thought-provoking observations andspawning of stirring discussions.

The benefits of Web-based ERPs were reported to be similar to the ones characteristicfor the On-premise ERPs. They furthermore included remote data access, costefficiency, flexibility, scalability, as well as the esublishment of a new customerdrivenrelationship with the ERP vendor. The major disadvantages of SaaS wereconsidered to be security, cost (in the long run), and customizability. These disadvantages, which were first reported years ago, are continuously dismissed by theadavncements and innovations made in Web-based solutions. Findings from previousstudies and trends suggest that issues of security, cost and customizabilityare gradually disappearing as technology improves and industry dynamics becomesmore customer-centric. Security, which was a major issue in 2007 slowlyfaded and is not regarded as the concern it used to be. From 2008 till now the issuesof customizability and TCO have been heavily disputed about Web-based ERPsolutions. The problem of customizability has also been found to be diminishingdue to technologically advanced capabilities of these systems; new systems haveemerged and old systems have improved enough to provide this feature. Cost hasnever been a transparent issue when it comes to IT investments and has beenshown to be higher in On-Premise solutions through the TVO approach whichlooks at other hidden and non-financial costs. All of the above sheds new light intothe once-‘static’ benefits and drawbacks of Web-based solutions, and provides afresh insight into this developing phenomenon.

The Evolution of the Connector View Concept: Enterprise Models for Interoperability Solutions in the Extended Enterprise2011Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

People around the world who are working in companies and organisations need to collaborate, and in their collaboration use information managed by different information systems. The requirements of information systems to be interoperable are therefore apparant. While the technical problems, of communicating or sharing information between different information systems, have become less difficult to solve, the attention has turned to other aspects of interoperability. Such aspects concern the bussiness processes, the knowledge, the syntax and the semantics that involves the information managed by information systems.

Enterprise modelling is widely used to achieve integration solutions within enterprises and is a research area both for the integration wihin an enterprise (company or organisation) and the integration between several different enterprises. Enterprise modelling takes into account several of the aspects, mentioned as important for interoperability, in the models that are created.

This thesis describes a research which has resulted in the connector view concept. The main contribution with this framework comprises a model structure and an approach, for performing the modelling of the collaboration between several partners in an extended enterprise. The purpose of the enterprise models thus created, by using the connector view concept, is to find solutions to interoperability problems, that exist in the collaboration between several enterprises.

Knowledge Supply for SME Networks: Application Cases and Selected Technical Approaches2011Inngår i: E-Business Issues, Challenges and Opportunities for SMEs: Driving Competitiveness / [ed] Maria Manuela Cruz-Cunha, Joao Varajao, Hershey, Pa.: IGI Global, 2011, s. 149-172Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Current trends of globalisation and increased competition require new forms of organisation and work support. Especially in small and medium sized enterprises (SME), the competitiveness and future market position of an enterprise is closely related to the ability of cooperating with partners in SME networks or virtual supplier organisations. In complex work processes with a number of distributed partners, high requirements with respect to competence and a lot of rules and guidelines to be obeyed; detecting and sharing knowledge among different members of networked organizations is an important issue. Based on an empirical investigation regarding the demands of SME and illustrating this demand with industrial cases, this paper investigates two technical approaches supporting knowledge supply in networked organizations: enterprise modeling and self-organisation of flexible supply networks. These approaches are presented with related work and their limits and potentials.

    Abstract [sv]

Enterprise Resource Planning: Adding value to E-business2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Organizations are now more than ever before faced with rapid changes in the market place and the need to stay competitive, profitable and satisfy customers and suppliers has driven them to seek technologies that will help them realize these goals. Two of the main con-tenders are Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and E-business related technologies. There appear not to be so many publicized literatures on the relationship between ERP and E-business. It is based on this that this report studied six (6) cases to examine the value of ERP to E-business. This study discusses their relationship, how they impact each other and how they can be made to be more useful when integrated using Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) and empirical research. What transpires from this research is that both vendors and organizations using these two technologies assigns specific values that ERP has on E-business according to their degree of importance. These values in order of importance are; increased competitiveness, increased agility and speed of business operations, improved communication, increased sales, improved business processes, reduced cost and increased profitability. Finally the study examines these values and concluded based on these values to suggest the implications for future research.

    Abstract [en]

It is becoming increasingly important how IT projects handle production sets in order to ensure flawless deliveries and quickly satisfy customers and users with new qualityassured functionality. For newly started projects, it is a natural part to build a delivery structure around a Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery workflow that are methods for automating and contributing to this. But for a management project that has been going on for several years without having adopted automated methods, it is not certain that it is just as economically justified from the customer's perspective. The purpose of the thesis project is to contribute with knowledge in automatic commissioning as older management projects can take part in to better understand whether there is an economic motivation to implement an automatic commissioning tool and a CI / CD method of operation. The knowledge can be used to better motivate a management group that annually bases the management project's budget to invest in an automated deployment flow. Based on the purpose, four questions were formed that have been answered by developing an automated commissioning tool and comparing it with the manual methods that a management project uses. The methods were evaluated by experiment and analysed by T-test to investigate the time efficiency of the tool and ROI analysis to assess whether the tool is a profitable investment. The result of the study indicates that an automatic tool is more time-efficient, but that the development time for developing the tool represents a higher cost than the time savings. This means that the management project on which the tool was applied would have a negative return of - 6% based on one year. Instead, the thesis highlights other positive consequences that should be emphasized by introducing automatic commissioning. The work responds to the purpose by clarifying how the two flows look from a developer perspective and presenting cost-related effects that the automatic tool constitutes compared to manual methods. The results of the study contribute to increase knowledge in automatic deployments and its effects on older management projects using manual methods.

Understanding user acceptance of Digital Library2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The use of Digital library has grown considerably past two decades. Using new tech-nology effectively depends on acceptance for that technology, which in turn would be affected by users’ perception of that technology’s usefulness and ease of use. Research on "usable" digital library shows that potential users of digital libraries may not use it, in spite of the system availability and the millions of dollars that have been spent. There is a need to identify external factors which has an affect users’ intention of using this system.

    Abstract [en]

Changes in healthcare delivery needs have necessitated the design of new models for connecting providers and consumers of services. While healthcare delivery has traditionally been a push market, multi-sided markets offer the potential for transitioning to a pull market for service delivery. However, there is a need to better understand the business model for multi-sided markets as a first step to using them in healthcare. This paper addressed that need and describes a multi-sided market evaluation framework. Our framework identifies patient, governance and service delivery as three levels of brokerage consideration for evaluating multi-sided markets in healthcare.

    Abstract [en]

We have conducted an analysis of data from 502,891 Twitter users and focused on investigating the potential correlation between hashtags and the increase of followers to determine whether the addition of hashtags to tweets produces new followers. We have designed an experiment with two groups of users: one tweeting with random hashtags and one tweeting without hashtags. The results showed that there is a correlation between hashtags and followers: on average, users tweeting with hashtags increased their followers by 2.88, while users tweeting without hashtags increased 0.88 followers.
    Abstract [sv]

    A mixture-of-experts approach for gene regulatory network inference2016Inngår i: International Journal of Data Mining and Bioinformatics, ISSN 1748-5673, E-ISSN 1748-5681, Vol. 14, nr 3, s. 258-275Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Gene regulatory network (GRN) inference is an important problem in bioinformatics. Many machine learning methods have been applied to increase the inference accuracy. Ensemble learning methods are shown in DREAM3 and DREAM5 challenges to yield a higher inference accuracy than individual algorithms. However, no ensemble method has been proposed to take advantage of the complementarity among existing algorithms from the perspective of network motifs. We propose an ensemble method based on the principle of Mixture-of-Experts ensemble learning. The method can quantitatively evaluate the accuracy of individual algorithms on predicting each type of the network motifs and assign weights to the algorithms accordingly. The individual predictions are then used to generate the ensemble prediction. By performing controlled experiments and statistical tests, the proposed ensemble method is shown to yield a significantly higher accuracy than the generic average ranking method used in the DREAM5 challenge. In addition, a new type of network motif is found in GRN, the inclusion of which can increase the accuracy of the proposed method significantly.

The Role of Online Reputation Management in Strategic Business Decisions in Ericsson2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 poäng / 60 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

With this immensely and immeasurably growing Internet technology, the need for onlinereputation management (ORM) is also growing accordingly. It is increasingly seen as animportant means by firms to create stronger alliance between customers and the firm (Bealand Strauss, 2008). ORM is relatively new which theoretically and empirically very youngphenomenon in which very few researches have been made around the area ever since.Hence, the intention of this research is to fill the knowledge gaps recognized and useEricsson Company to conduct an exploratory qualitative research to give empirical value tothe study. The purpose of this study is to explore how ORM can play role in making strategic businessdecisions through branding and construct a model that shows relationship among ORM,branding and strategic business decision. The relevant research concepts that are discussedin the literature review are linked through logical links depicted in the model. After the model is constructed Ericsson Company was taken as a case and qualitative study was made using an in-depth interview with the company’s expert in this area in Ericssonglobal to see how the concept of ORM, branding and strategic decisions in the model areinterlinked to each other. This research has answers on how this company perform its ORM,how ORM can influence branding, how branding can influence strategic business decisionand in the end how ORM can influence strategic business decision. From the finding of this research, ORM has influence on branding and brand has influenceon strategic business decision. Finally, it can also be concluded that ORM has impact on strategic business decisions through branding.

To Invest Or Not Invest?: Factors affecting IT investment decisions2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

Many studies indicate that there are numerous factors that promote or hamper the adoption of IT applications and are a prime concern for many researchers and practitioners (Abrahamson, 1991). Two main factors which need to be examined closely when making decisions about IT investments are the internal and external factors. Since these factors play a great role in decision making of IT investments, it is imperative to study their impact on the strategic planning because this forms the founding blocks for IT decision making.

    Problem

As the business environment keeps on changing, managers need to thoroughly scan the environment before investing in an Information technology system. The reason is to identify the major factors that can be detrimental to the organization from reaping the potential rewards from their IT investments. Sutton, (1998) views the process of environment scanning as a technique to identify threats and opportunities while improving long and short- term planning. With the current financial crisis that started in 2007, there seems to be a pandemic concern in the massive. Inevitably, this has lead to a risen concern for organizations to carefully study this particular factor when deciding on investing in new information technology.

    Purpose

The aim of this thesis is to establish and evaluate the internal and external factors affecting the decision making in IT investments, in particular ERP systems. It also seeks to contribute to literature on the impact of the current financial crisis on making IT investment decisions.

    Method

Our research study took a deductive approach with the use of qualitative data that was collected from semi-structured interviews of three respondents. The interviewed companies were Fagerhult Belysning, Sogeti and Professor Mats-Åke Hugosson.

    Conclusion

The evaluation of the internal and external factors affecting the decision making was analyzed with the SWOT analysis. Each potential factor was categorized under internal, strengths or weakness and external, opportunities or threats and then assisted in reducing the weaknesses in the organization and mitigating the potential threat in order to understand these factors influence on ERP adoption in Fagerhult. An advice for organizations is despite the financial crisis, the question they ought to ponder over is firstly the obvious which is, do we have the available resources? And if that is not a constraint, the next issue is how we can get the optimal value from our IT investments and our correspondents laid it out clearly; organizations need to plan ahead and continue making IT investments that aims at creating a suitable balance/ fit or harmonization between their IT and business strategy.

    Abstract [sv]

Developing Business Models in the Video Game Industry: An evaluation to strategic choices made by small and medium-sized development studios2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Digitalization has given rise to new opportunities for small and medium-sized video game development studios. No longer bound by physical products and creative restrains, the de-veloper has been empowered with independency. This qualitative study is aimed to under-stand how a development studio develops their business model and how underlying strate-gy is formulated. Additionally we evaluate the degree of innovativeness of the business model in terms of radical and incremental innovation according to Damanpour (1991). To achieve this we present a comprehensive literature review as to gain a more theoretical un-derstanding of industry mechanics and to be able to comprehend reasoning behind existing business models. We structure the dynamics of the business model by analyzing nine busi-ness model aspects as suggested by Osterwalder, Pigneur and Clark (2010). Following our theoretical framework we gain practical input from four separate case studies. An interpret-ative research method is used to gain better understanding of reasoning and choices made. We interpret our findings following a narrative approach which shows that the digitaliza-tion has preluded a paradigm shift in the sense that development studios have started to adopt activities otherwise performed by key partners. As barriers dissipate small and me-dium-sized development studios try to make sense of the current industry, but struggle in doing so. Having to reinvent themselves we conclude that a focus towards creating thicker customer relationships is considered and the idea of seeing games as a service is acknowl-edged to depict the future of the industry. The conclusions of this study contribute to both academic science and industry practice.

Developing an Ontology for Wood-related Industry: An Experience Report2004Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Ontologies are widely used as a technique for representation and reuse of knowledge. This paper summarizes experiences and results of a project within ontology development, with wood-related industry as application sector. One major aspect of the project was the selection of a suitable methodology for ontology development. In a literature study existing methodologies were analyzed with respect to their suitability for small-scale application contexts. As no existing methodology was fully adequate, an improved methodology was proposed. The main intention was to reduce development time and effort to meet the demands of small-scale application contexts. The improved methodology was applied and evaluated in the project, i.e. in the development of an ontology for wood-related industry. The main conclusion is that the methodology was adequate for the project, but some aspects could be elaborated and further investigated, such as reuse of already existing ontologies.
