    Studiens ämne är språkutveckling med fokus på barn med annat modersmål. Där syftet med studien är att undersöka hur förskollärare beskriver sitt arbete med att främja språkutvecklingen hos de barn som har svenska som andraspråk. Studiens forskningsfrågor är: hur beskriver förskollärarna att de arbetar med barns språkutveckling? vilka metoder kan användas för att främja svenska som andraspråk enligt förskollärarna? Den teoretiska utgångspunkten för studien har varit det sociokulturella perspektivet. För att besvara syftet och frågeställningarna har sex förskollärare intervjuats med hjälp av kvalitativa metoder.   Resultatet visar att förskollärarna arbetar aktivt för att främja barn med ett annat modersmål, där olika arbetssätt och metoder framkom. Arbetssätten var främst TAKK och bildstöd. Polyglutt är ett annat verktyg som nämns av flera förskollärare, som används för att främja både modersmålet, samt andraspråket. I resultatet framkommer att förskollärarna uppmanar vårdnadshavare att tala modersmålet med barnen för att deras språkutveckling ska föras framåt, då modersmålet är en viktig tillgång i förskolans verksamhet. Modersmålet är en bidragande faktor vid inlärningen av ett andraspråk där ingen förskollärare anser inlärningen som negativ. Vikten av att vårdnadshavarna visar intresse och nyfikenhet i arbetet framkommer tydligt i både litteratur och i intervjuerna.

    Abstract [en]

    This work shows that competitive translation results can be obtained in a constrained setting by incorporating the latest advances in memory and compute optimization. We train and evaluate large multilingual translation models using a single GPU for a maximum of 100 hours and get within 4-5 BLEU points of the top submission on the leaderboard. We also benchmark standard baselines on the PMI corpus and re-discover well-known shortcomings of translation systems and metrics.

    Abstract [en]

    Today there is often a need to re-innovate who you are and what you do and re-think the tools that are used and the business models that guide action. The purpose of this paper is to show how transforming a document, such as a patient record, might start a horizontal and vertical movement, a movement of coordination and enhancement in an organizational setting, such as a hospital clinic. The observations presented here and the conclusions drawn were obtained during a three year case study following implications of constructing and computerizing a patient record at three different hospitals. The results were then analyzed, interpreted and discussed within a framework combining theories about knowledge management and with cognitive theories about use of interpretative schemes and representations. This paper tries to look beyond the implications of reconstructing a patient record on a micro-level or explore if it is good or bad to computerize it. Instead this paper theorizes about how re-thinking the interpretative scheme for what a patient record is and how it may be used might restructure a health care setting. It proposes that what the employees want to achieve with the knowledge management system depends on what strategy they have for it.

    Abstract [en]

    We evaluated a range of neural machine translation techniques developed specifically for low-resource scenarios. Unsuccessfully. In the end, we submitted two runs: (i) a standard phrase-based model, and (ii) a random babbling baseline using character trigrams. We found that it was surprisingly hard to beat (i), in spite of this model being, in theory, a bad fit for polysynthetic languages; and more interestingly, that (ii) was better than several of the submitted systems, highlighting how difficult low-resource machine translation for polysynthetic languages is.

    Improvements of the syntax of the query language DQL2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis focuses on improving the syntax of a query language named DQL(Dynamic Query Language) in order to enhance the user experience and productivity of its users. The study investigates the original state of the query language and identifies areas for improvement in terms of intuitiveness, efficiency, and consistency. 

    Through an extensive review of existing literature and case studies, the thesis develops a set of guidelines for designing intuitive query languages that minimise the cognitive load for users. The thesis also proposes several modifications to the syntax of DQL that aim to simplify the structure and improve the readability of queries.

    Finally, the thesis evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed modifications through  semi-structured interviews to compare the original syntax with the proposed new one.

    Internet has since the beginning widened the form of communication. In recent times one of the most popular form is via blogs.

    To express yourself has become more than words. The blogs give you the ability to add pictures, videos, colors and more. You are also able to use typological medium like italic and bold types. All these elements contribute to how the text is read and interpreted.

    From 14 different diary blogs written by high school students and 289 posts in total my thesis intend to study which method of fabrications these blogs use.

    The question formulations I have based my thesis on are:

    ·         How do high school students use different ways of expressions to esthetical and creatively create posts at the so called diary blogs?

    -          How does headlining, pictures, film, colour and different typological medium being used to create communication and different expression on the posts?

    ·         How does the diary blog relate to the traditional diary regarding the formation and forms of communication?

    Through a structuralistic analysis method based on Jurij Lotman’s analysis I’ve approached the posts on different levels, where I examine details in the text but also the structure. I’ve found that the diary blog and the diary separate from each other on several plans, foremost the way of communication which is overt in a diary blog. Linguistically the diary blog distinguish itself from diaries by the way to be able to emphasize words or a sentence with italic and bold types. Smileys and different kinds of emotional forms of expressions are used by the blogger to avoid misconceptions.

    The thesis has proven that a widening way of looking at linguistic and communications are necessary due to the new medium that comes with the IT.

    As building information modeling (BIM) gains popularity in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, manufacturers are required to distribute their product specifications in digital product models. Currently, manufacturers mainly employ proprietary formats, such as BIM objects supplemented by PDF documents to represent their product data descriptions. However, these formats do not support flexible automated product search and data integration. This paperdescribes the use of Semantic Web technologies in combination with BIM-based visual programming language (VPL) to automatically integrate product data from external databases. To facilitate data integration, we introduced a method to semantically represent product data linked with the CEN/TS 17623:2021 standard using ontologies in web ontology language (OWL). The study has focused on the use case of a manufacturer of lighting products. Results show that building designers are able to execute a more efficient product search that satisfies their query requirements and returns suitable products of their choice from the manufacturer's database based on their requests. This approach eliminates the time-consuming and error-prone process of manually entering product data into BIM software.

    DIGITNET: A Deep Handwritten Digit Detection and Recognition Method Using a New Historical Handwritten Digit Dataset2021In: Big Data Research, ISSN 2214-5796, E-ISSN 2214-580X, Vol. 23, article id 100182Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper introduces a novel deep learning architecture, named DIGITNET, and a large-scale digit dataset, named DIDA, to detect and recognize handwritten digits in historical document images written in the nineteen century. To generate the DIDA dataset, digit images are collected from 100,000 Swedish handwritten historical document images, which were written by different priests with different handwriting styles. This dataset contains three sub-datasets including single digit, large-scale bounding box annotated multi-digit, and digit string with 250,000, 25,000, and 200,000 samples in Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color spaces, respectively. Moreover, DIDA is used to train the DIGITNET network, which consists of two deep learning architectures, called DIGITNET-dect and DIGITNET-rec, respectively, to isolate digits and recognize digit strings in historical handwritten documents. In DIGITNET-dect architecture, to extract features from digits, three residual units where each residual unit has three convolution neural network structures are used and then a detection strategy based on You Look Only Once (YOLO) algorithm is employed to detect handwritten digits at two different scales. In DIGITNET-rec, the detected isolated digits are passed through 3 different designed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures and then the classification results of three different CNNs are combined using a voting scheme to recognize digit strings. The proposed model is also trained with various existing handwritten digit datasets and then validated over historical handwritten digit strings. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture trained with DIDA (publicly available from: https://didadataset.github.io/DIDA/) outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the study was to investigate how different types of Natural Language Processing (NLP) models can be fine-tuned for use within Named Entity Recognition (NER) and how these models work differently. The aim of this was to identify which type of model works best when it comes to entity extraction. To test the models, they were fine-tuned using PyTorch and Huggingface Transformers libraries. Here, it was also investigated which other techniques are not based on machine learning that can be used to solve the problem of entity extraction. The results of these tests showed that the KB/BERT-base-swedish-cased model worked best. Also, there are other techniques that can be used to solve the problem of entity extraction but that it is machine learning that is the most effective. KB/BERT-base-swedish-cased was shown to be the best model but it also proved that it may be due to the purpose that you need to use the model within. The study limitations have been that there was no large data set that could be used for training and that there was a lack of time to produce a new dataset.

    Abstract [en]

    This squib sketches an analysis of the contribution of appositive constructions to metaphoric readings (Australia, the country with a passion for rugby). It is suggested that optional constructions can contribute the emergence of underlying metaphoric readings of sentences, depending on how they interact with other phrases and constituents. This analysis is based on a simple variant of the Type-Logical Syntax framework, enriched with a simple semantic algorithm that computes "local" source and target domains. As a test case, a discussion of a sub-set of appositives labelled as "spatial" appositives (Australia, the land where dreams come true) is discussed and accounted for.
