Abstract [en]

Living in the 21st century, where the world is considered flat and people, businesses and markets are as connected as never before, more and more startup companies decide to use the whole world as their ‘playground’ from their ‘first breath’. However, even “before a Born Global sees the light of the day” there are challenges and obstacles that come along with this concept that clearly differentiate this type from all the other types of startups.

Through an unique single case study, including semi-structured interviews with the founder, observations of daily business and insights into first hand project notes, this thesis gave answers to the research questions on what the main concerns/challenges of a Swedish Born Global startup throughout the pre-venture creation phase are and how entrepreneurs of Born Global startups can prepare themselves for starting such a global venture.

It was found that the main challenges of a Swedish Born Global startup throughout the pre-venture creation phase can be categorized into ‘Resources’, ‘Management’, ‘Time’, ‘Networking’, ‘Change’, and ‘Marketing & Communication’. These challenges were identified to have a significant impact on the pre-venture creation phase and require a lot of attention form the entrepreneur.

Furthermore, it was found that it is almost impossible to prepare oneself 100 percent for this ‘learning-by-doing’ journey. Therefore, this thesis gave suggestions on what steps can be taken in the pre-venture creation phase to increase the likeliness of success and take initial actions to lower the impact of the upcoming challenges.
