Correlations between mental illness and alcoholconsumption and smoking : The nurse's disease prevention and health promotion (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The nurse in her work comes in contact with patients with mental illness and who also consume alcohol and tobacco. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mental illness and alcohol and smoking at 40-, 50- and 60 year old men and women. The study had a quantitative descriptive design and was a retrospective cross-sectional study. The data that were used was material already obtained by the Health Initiative conducted in two counties in southern Sweden in 2014. The data was done in Pearson`s Chi-square test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Student's t test and one-way ANOVA. As a statistical program, SPSS version 11.0 was used. The result showed that there was no correlation between mental health and alcohol consumption and smoking. Although no association was seen, it is important for the nurse to have knowledge of mental illness, alcohol and smoking, and how they affect each other. This knowledge contributes to a better identification and treatment between mental illness and alcohol consumption and smoking.
