'Holiday' - a highly ideological question! A hermeneutic study of the debate in the Swedish parliament that took place during the legislation of the Compulsory Holidays Act of 1938 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this Bachelor thesis in History I have used a hermeneutic perspective to analyse and interpret the parliamentary debate that took place in 1938 regarding the question of the Compulsory Holidays Act. I’ve mapped the different ideological positions of the representatives of the parliamentary debate regarding the legislation where the Compulsory Holidays Act was confirmed in law.

My survey also compare these ideological manifestations with a modern survey of the political cultures within the Swedish Parliament today.I have, with a hermeneutic method and using Thomson's analytical tools for argumentation, mapped the ideological manifestations made by the representatives in the parliament during the debate. My theoretical frame of reference is to be viewed as 'rules of conduct' to the interpretations and I have also described the parties' contemporary culture and how it stands against the debate that took place in 1938.In my result I present what I have surveyed. Even though 80 years have passed since the legislation was enacted, the political ideological manifestations of the different parties are close to those of contemporary party culture.

The thesis is concluded by my conclusions of the result, where I discuss how it can be explained and I elucidate what can be read through the parliamentary debate.
