Patients experience of bowel preparation before a computed tomography examination of the colon. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Computed tomography examinations of the colon, good bowel preparations are needed to get good diagnostic results. Residual stool left in the colon can give a false appearance of polyps and tumors. Many patients think the bowel preparation is more difficult than the examination itself.

The aim of this study is to investigate patient experiences of bowel preparation. To see if there is a difference in terms of gender and bowel preparation methods.

The study had a quantitative approach and was performed at two radiology clinics in Sweden that use different bowel preparation methods. A questionnaire with 11 questions in likert-scale with intervals of 1-5 was used.

The result indicate that women experiences the bowel preparation as more difficult than the men. The information was from both genders perceived as good and easy to understand. The Sodium phosphate method was experienced as the most unpleasant and gave tendency to nausea, and information about it was good. Fecal tagging was considered as the most difficult since it also gave tendency to stomach pain and came with difficult information. The study concludes that the patient was pleased with the information they received, and knew how important the survey was and would may do bowels preparation again if it needed. However, there are room for improvement in the time of bowel preparation, the taste and fewer different care products was wanted.
