Opportunities and Challenges in Social Work with Muslim clients : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

With the emergence of Muslim communities in the Western World, there is a need for social workers to gain a deeper understanding of Muslims and the social challenges they face. This literature review includes 30 referee studies which are summarized and discussed affecting different types of social work with Muslims through three different areas; education social work, voluntary social work and professional social work. The results of the study shows a consistent gap of knowledge in these three areas, especially lack of knowledge about culture and religion. This lack of knowledge often leads on to the fear and hence unwillingness to adapt social work to Muslims' needs. Finally, the paper proposes some directions and cautions for future research in an understudied field.
