Abstract [en]

Background- Gazelles are rapid growth companies that constantly create new job- opportunities and contribute positively to the Swedish economy. Todays companies expe- rience a truly high competitive environment with challenging demands. Since competition in the market is never a fading factor, it is important to look at how companies can prepare and plan to reach and sustain growth in order to stay competitive in this very difficult but interesting environment where a small amount of companies sustain their growth.

Purpose- The purpose for this thesis is to investigate how rapid growing companies pre- pare to handle the effects of growth and how to sustain rapid growth. We will investigate how the planning process for Swedish Gazelle companies, as representatives of rapid growth SMEs has been formed in the growth process with respect to leadership, company culture, the role of employees and company structure.

Method- In order to fulfill the purpose of the thesis we used a mixed method approach where we conducted qualitative interviews with 9 different respondents in 5 companies, and a quantitative online survey based on 105 respondents. All respondents in our research have been appointed the Gazelle-award issued by the Swedish financial paper Dagens In- dustri.

Findings and Conclusion- After analyzing the empirical results with suitable theories, some main conclusions were reached. The study demonstrated that there is a great variety to the extent how the Gazelle companies are preparing and planning to become lasting shooting stars and handle the effects of growth. We further conclude that the Gazelle companies with respect to preparing and planning have focused far most on the aspects of employees and company structure. These were also the aspects where companies have to a great extent experienced difficulties with.

Practical Implications- This thesis gives valuable indications to company managers, company owners as well as employees of rapid growth firms that it is vital to form an un- derstanding of and consider possible implications when preparing for the effects of rapid growth and to sustain growth.
