Abstract [en]

This thesis conducts a cross-section analysis on the issue of the relationship between ex-change rate volatility and trade patterns. All 34 OECD countries are thereby selected as research objects, where the time period chosen is 2012. In the course of this thesis, the gravity model is applied as the fundamental method to analyze data. Based on the gravity model, there are 7 independent variables in total: exchange rate volatility, GDP in the exporting countries, GDP in the receiving countries, GDP per capita in the receiving coun-tries, distance, common border and language. The volume of export is considered as de-pendent variable in the regression analysis through a log-log equation. The empirical re-sults show that exchange rate volatility has a negative effect on trade patterns when con-trolling for market size and all structural variables.
