The need of support among women with breast cancer : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The number of women affected by breast cancer has increased since the 60´s and the disease is today the most common type of cancer among Swedish women. The purpose of this literature review was to describe what kind of support the affected women needed during the beginning of their disease. The study was based on ten qualitative articles published between the years 1997-2012. The result were divided into four categories; emotional support, informative support, practical support and support from women with similar experience. The results indicate that women’s need of support was high during the beginning of their disease and these women wished to be supported from family, friends and healthcare professionals. It is necessary that healthcare professionals are aware of the type of support these women require, to be able to meet their needs and expectations. The needs are individual and differs from women to women, something the nurse should be responsive to.
