Abstract [en]

Abstract

All news which are being exposed to society, are being portrayed from many angles. The language being used by journalists are used to create and describe reality, the content and meaning of the journalists’ representation leaves room for differences, identities and collaboration through the use of media texts.

The purpose of this essay is to examine how the begging romani people in Sweden are being portrayed in six articles from Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet, to conclude if there are any words or descriptions that are linked to the oriental culture and the concept of “The Others”. We also want to see if there are any differences between the six articles. The reason behind choosing a morning newspaper and an evening paper to compare is because there are a lot of differences between the two. The evening paper can be purchased daily and is appealing towards the consumer through their sensational journalism and their tabloids. The morning paper has a different economic stage where they are reliant on their consumers to subscribe to their paper, where their strong point of view is nuanced news reports. In order to implement the essay we used the theories of cultural racism, stigma and agenda-setting and the method of critical discourse analysis.

The outcome highlights shows that the newspapers representation of the romani beggars, throughout in the six articles, can be connected to the description “The Others” and the oriental culture. The result also shows that the romani beggars in several articles are being portrayed as a problem and in contrast to “The Swedish”.
