Nursing Interventions to Promote Self-care in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure : A Literature Review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death among cardiovascular diseases. Self-care is part of the non-pharmacological treatment and can promote health and reduce mortality in heart failure patients. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe nursing interventions to promote self-care in patients with chronic heart failure. Method: Literature study with quantitative approach which includes 14 items in the result. Selected articles were searched for using the databases Medline and Cinahl and through secondary search in identified articles reference lists. All of the selected articles was reviewed for quality by a protocol from the Department of Nursing at the School of Health Sciences. Results: Five of the identified results articles showed an increase in self-care behavior of participating patients following completion of the intervention. Two of these studies had individual education as an intervention. Six articles did not reveal any effect of the interventions. Conclusion: Literature study's outcome was varied as a result of the interventions is not adapted for individuals as well as self-care concept was defined differently in selected articles. Two of the selected item to the result had a positive effect on self-care behavior when the intervention was individualized. Both of these studies had interventions supported by Orem self-care theory. This means that we look at the individual's knowledge and needs through the supportive and educational system.
