This paper aims at understanding how different KI processes co-exist in a technology development project. Starting in a dialectic relation between the integrationist perspective and the taxonomic perspective, we saw that these two approaches corresponded to different activities observed in the field. To emphasize different aspects of work in a development project we have used metaphors, rather than perspectives, to address concurrent processes. The metaphors Sum, Synergy and Source are described and illustrated with empirical examples. Together, the three metaphors highlight the multilevel and dynamic aspects of knowledge integration processes.
