Abstract [en]

This Master thesis project was made in collaboration with Nimbus Boats, who manufacture leisure boats for sports and cruising. The aim was from a customer focused approach develop a new 27 feet motorboat. The purpose was to investigate how a new boat concept could look like, especially from a customer perspective and reflect on the design process. The target was to develop an innovative, functional and aesthetical pleasing concept with a focus on the near future market.

This project is theoretically based on the design process, design thinking theory and design methods. The product development process relied heavily on market research as unstructured interviews, semi-structured interviews and a big survey was employed early in the process. A long with background analysis the design process also included methods like: the design brief, project planning, stakeholder analysis, ergonomics, competitor analysis, benchmarking, functional analysis, target group/ personas, image board, brainstorming, semantics, sketching, evaluation methods, CAD-modeling and finally physical model building. The aim was to develop a very social, comfortable and secure boat that can deliver the ultimate feeling of freedom and experience of nature.

The result of the design process was a rendered model and a physical model in scale 1:20 that hopefully fulfilled the purpose well. The concept has a modern, dynamic, vigorous and sporty look with large social areas.
