Abstract [en]

Producing a building is a long and complex process. It consists of several parts, from the feasibility study and design stage onto the construction and finally the management of the building. The design process is a critical part of the process where construction plans are made. The quality of the plans affect the production phase in great extent and faulty plans can pose a risk for extra costs for all parts in the process. The cost of producing dwellings has increased the last years and the detail design process is one of many phases where improvements can mean cost savings within the whole building process.

This report aims to point at parts within the detail design process which could be more efficient, regarding communication, follow-up and time planning, and to give suggestions for improvements. Furthermore this report aims to show how a separated project manager and manager of the design process affect the project itself. With three question formulations as a basis several interviews took place with people active within the detail design processes to retrieve their thoughts about this. Furthermore case studies were made on a few projects. Literature studies of different systems, which aim to make processes more effective, where made.

The result shows that the communication, follow-up and time planning doesn’t operate in the best possible way. A better communication and an increased amount of follow-up have positive effects on the whole detail design stage. By visualize the work flow and by working through the projects with a higher intensity, where the involved worked side by side during longer work meetings, a more effective detail design process can be accomplished. By reducing the amount of projects among the involved in the detail design stage, a more effective work flow can be reached. A more secure time plan can be accomplished by the means of that all involved in the project put it together, and thereafter split it up in smaller parts. Furthermore the detail design process takes many advantages from a separation of the project manager and manager of the design process. These two roles differ from each other in many ways, both in type of assignments and field of responsibility. The factors that especially point at this fact is the increased knowledge within the project, better security within the management and a better flow within the project. Furthermore a separate manager of the design process has more time to do the important follow-up. The detail design process is a complex process that requires a lot from all involved and the manager of the design process is here the one who coordinate everybody’s work to accomplish the best possible result.
