Accessibility for Elderly People Contributes to Inclusion : A Qualitative Study on A bus for everyone. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In order to perform meaningful activities and feel community with others when you are older, you need to be able to transport yourself; this is of importance to maintain good health and experience good quality of life. Due to different disabilities that come with increasing age, many older people find it difficult to travel with regular buses. The purpose of this study was to describe what meaning A bus for everyone has for older peoples’ participation in society. The design of the study was qualitative, targeted sampling was done, and the study group was selected from predetermined criteria. The study group consisted of six women and five men; all aged over 55 years and all had traveled with A bus for everyone. An unstructured interview with open questions was used for data collection; the result showed that a combination of bus design, environment, and the people surrounding them was of importance. These factors contributed to everyone being able to participate, which results in older people feeling less disabled and feeling a sense of belonging in a community. The conclusion was that A bus for everyone provides increased accessibility and belonging for older people, contributing to participation in society.
