Ecosystem Services : A study about how student-teachers reflect upon mankind’s dependence on nature (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study was based on the concept ecosystem services and conducted in a way as to track how student-teachers reflected upon mankind’s dependence on nature; furthermore, their own personal connection to nature. Data collection was essentially based on pre-tests and post-tests completed by 29 students.

The pre-test and post-test data were analysed by applying a phenomenographic approach. As a complement to this study four students participated in a focused-conversation designed to investigate how the students reflected on their personal connection to nature.

The pre-test and post test analysis discerned five qualitatively different ways to reflect upon the prerequisites and conditions required for human survival. These could be ranked with increasing complexity, where descriptions reflecting human dependence on nature were evident in three of them. In the post-test, changes in students' ways of reasoning could be tracked; results revealed that more students had expressed an understanding of mankind’s dependence on nature.

The focus conversation demonstrated that students' personal connection to nature focused on nature’s aesthetic and recreational services rather than those linked to nature’s fundamental processes.
