Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to create an assembly system for Mastec Precision Machinery (MPM) and a new production layout design for the expansion of their current facility in Shanghai in order to cover future demands of the production.

In order to design a layout suitable for MPM two research questions were considered. What critical factors affect MPM’s assembly system and what type of production layout fulfills the identified critical factors.

A study was carried out at five Swedish reference companies where critical factors were identified for successfully design a layout. At MPM interviews with key personnel were accomplished and a value stream mapping was carried out to identify the critical factors that were special for the company.

Based on the identified critical factors and the theory derived from literature a suggested assembly system was formed, focusing on the material and information handling. Four layout design alternatives were realized using a systematic facility planning based on the suggested assembly system. The four different alternatives were then assessed with a failure mode and effect analysis where the final design was extracted.

The final design consists of a detailed design of the work setting based on Swedish ergonomic standards and has been realized after investigating the ergonomic situation at MPM using a questionnaire by Helander (2006).
