Inspired by a constructivist approach to social science (Czarniawska 2003; Schwandt 1994, 2003) where constructs of strategists and strategic context are explicitly discussed, the main concern of this paper is to return to the research question: "What is it like inside a strategist‟s world?" which originally was suggested by Smircich & Stubbart (1985). Drawing on an interpretive study of the Modern Corporation as the lived everyday experiences of CEOs the purpose of this paper is to discuss a possible (re-)construction of both strategists and strategic contexts. Alfred Schutz (1967, 1973) claimed that interpretive social scientists should be engaged in processes of constructing sense of a second order out of the common sense thought objects of the first order engaging human beings in their everyday life. The interview study of 6 CEOs of companies listed on the Swedish Stock Exchange suggest that not only are the CEOs involved in projects aiming at constructing their companies in relation to a particular industry but they are also involved in ongoing projects of constructing their companies in relation to a context of ownership in a broad sense inhabited by various representatives of shareholders. A typicality of strategists involving both a context of industry and a context of ownership is constructed and these constructs involves a possible re-construction of both strategists and the context in which they are constituted. This paper ends with a discussion on how these findings can contribute to existing discussion of constructs of strategists and strategic contexts in the strategic management and governance literature.
