The ultimate aim of this paper is to encourage researchers and practitioners to refocus on middle-managers’ stress in order to create and develop healthy organisations. This paper offers a general review of the relation between work organisation and stress with a focus on middle-managers. By linking the organisation theory and the stress management literature, this review concludes that due to their pivotal role in today’s organisations, middle-managers should be seen as key actors in order to create sustainable development. However, stress management and middle-manager literatures reveal that middle-managers are living both challenging and stressing situations. Therefore, understanding and tackling middle-managers stress could be considered as a path towards healthy organisations. In this context, this paper suggests that a future challenge for the research in the management field, and particularly organisational behaviour as well as human resources management, should be to answer how today’s organisations could re-manage middle-managers’ stress to create and develop sustainable healthy organisations.
