Abstract

This bachelor thesis in political science examines the characteristics of a consolidated democracy, under the lights of its definitional standards. The purpose of the thesis is to provide an evaluation of the prospects for a consolidated democracy in the country Kosovo. Kosovo´s regime has for almost a decade been under the auspices of the United Nations.

The aim is to determine whether Kosovo merely is a democratic elected organization or in fact fulfill the definitional standards set up for a state. Thereby fulfilling the requirement for what the literature call conditions of a consolidated democracy. To be able to evaluate this five arenas have been studied in the case Kosovo, namely: civil society, political society, rule of law, state apparatus and economic society.

The study has revealed that the development of the five arenas in Kosovo has merely started. The thesis envisages that for Kosovo to be a consolidated democracy, further actions have to be taken by the state and its citizens.

Sammanfattning

Denna kandidatuppsats i statsvetenskap granskar karakteriseringen av en konsoliderad demokrati. Landet Kosovo har valts att observeras för dess unika historia, då dess styre nästan under ett decennium har varit kontrollerat av Förenta Nationerna.

Syftet är att påvisa om Kosovo endast är en demokratiskt vald organisation, eller verkligen disponerar förutsättningarna för en konsoliderad demokrati. För att undersöka verkligheten av en konsoliderad demokrati har dess definitionsmässiga begrepp studerats. Dessa motsvarar följande fem arenor; civilsamhället, det politiska samhället, rättssamhället, statsapparaten och det ekonomiska samhället.

Studien visar att utvecklingen av dessa fem arenor i Kosovo endast påbörjats. Ytligare åtgärder måste vidtas av Kosovo och dess invånare, för att landet skall kunna uppfylla karakteriseringen av en konsoliderad demokrati.
