The Transformation of the Divine in Artworks : A Study on the Power of Art to Challenge White Theology, and Its Significance for the Religious Identity of the Christian Afro-American Community (English)
Abstract [en]

This study analyzes two contemporary African American artworks to examine how they challenge the hegemonic perspective on Christianity and contribute to the development and strengthening of African American Christians' religious identity. The research questions guiding this study are:

  • How are Christian motifs presented in the artists' works?
  • How do the artworks challenge normative and stereotypical views of Christianity?
  • How can the motifs and messages in the artworks strengthen the religious identity of African Americans?

Using a theoretical framework shaped by W.E.B Du Bois' concepts and semiotics, the artworks were interpreted to uncover their meanings and representations. The findings reveal that these artworks critique Christian norms, providing African Americans with the opportunity to cultivate a more autonomous religious identity. By creatively challenging conventional notions and utilizing the symbolic value of Jesus to convey contemporary messages rooted in African American experiences, these artworks foster a sense of representation and instill pride in their religious identity.
