The subject of history consists of various elements that provide students with a versatile and comprehensive understanding of the subject. It includes the study of historical events, individuals, and cultures, analysis of primary and secondary sources, interpretation of historical texts and images, and reflection on historical perspectives and change over time. Teaching history can be a challenge for history teachers as they need to convey complex historical events and engage students in the learning process. The teacher has the primary responsibility of creating a stimulating and rewarding learning environment where different teaching methods can be used to enhance students' learning. Within certain boundaries, a history teacher has the freedom to use various teaching methods to engage and promote students' understanding of the subject. There are several teaching methods that a history teacher can employ, but what does research say? The purpose of this literature review is to highlight some of the teaching methods that research identifies as successful and why these methods are effective. To achieve this goal, data has been collected and analyzed through a systematic search in two different databases: Primo and Google Scholar. The study showed that successful teaching methods in history can include oral storytelling, historical movies, digital games, field trips, visuals pictures and role-playing activities. These methods enhance student engagement, interest, knowledge acquisition, empathy, and critical thinking skills when approaching historical knowledge. Additionally, some teaching methods can be combined in the classroom, leading to fruitful discussions and opening up opportunities to explore other subjects.
