Abstract [en]

In relation to the development of the media landscape, research in adaptation studies has stagnated. This has led to the fact that newer media such as videogames and TV series, which are used for adaptations as well as new storytelling, have not been fully explored. The supporting characters Bill and Frank from The Last of Us sparked both positive and negative reactions from fans when the TV series was published ten years after the videogame. Clear differences emerged in their stories, but it was unclear whether the portrayal of their sexuality had changed. The purpose of this study is to investigate how faithful the presentation of male characters’ portrayal of homosexuality is in the adaptation of the videogame to the TV series The Last of Us on an explicit level.

This study consists of a qualitative content analysis of five corresponding sequences from each medium. Adaptation theory and sexual scripts theory were applied to the result. It was found that both characters’ appearances and hobbies, as well as emotions and behaviour to some extent, relate closer to the new sexual scripts. It was discovered that there is a connection between the importance of the character’s role in the story and the level of fidelity it receives in the adaptation.
