2024 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
Moral panic or legitimate concern? : A scoping review on the impact of violent video games on young people's aggressive behaviors. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Purpose: The aim of the study was to summarize what previous research has shown about the impact of violent video games on young individuals' aggressive behavior.

Method: A scoping review was used to conduct the study. A sample of twelve studies was selected that address young people's aggressive behavior related to violent video games. These studies were reviewed and analyzed using a thematic analysis. Through the thematic analysis, the studies were coded to find commonalities. These codes were then categorized and themes were identified based on the categories.

Results: The results show that there are both studies that show a correlation between violent video games and young people developing aggressive behavior and studies that do not show such a correlation. In addition, existing research includes studies that show how factors other than playing violent video games affect young people's aggressive behavior, such as the young person's mental health, attachment to parents, peer influence, etc.

Conclusion: Altogether, the study shows that young people's development of aggressive behavior is caused by a combination of several factors, a small but significant part of which is violent video games.
