Abstract [en]

Gangsta rap has topped the Swedish music charts in recent years, and the genre´s controversial content has caused society to react and question what the messages in the songs really are. The purpose of the study is to investigate what kind of message is conveyed and how the lifestyle in gangster rap is portrayed. In addition, the aim is to investigate whether a disincentive from such lifestyle can be seen. The choice of method is a qualitive thematic content analysis with the aim of examining the songs for a deeper understanding of the messages. The selection in the study consists of 21 songs that have been on P3´s DigiLista between the years 2020 and 2023. The results shows that the songs depict the criminal lifestyle in a negative way and a dissuasion from such a lifestyle. In addition, it is possible to identify criticism of society and of social structures that disadvantage underprivileged groups in society and drag them into a destructive lifestyle.
