Online Gaming; Disorders by Design

Abstract [en]

This investigative study has sought out to find which video game design choices are prone to cause addictions or addictive behaviors, and to see if there are any connections between video game design elements and gaming disorders among students at Jönköping University. To find the answers to this, extensive research was conducted covering a considerable amount of scientific literature regarding the subject. Communication with the target demographic was made possible through quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews which were conducted digitally and physically respectively, and provided valuable data that brought the study forward. The study has covered the effects of excessive online gaming and internet gaming disorders (IGD) on individuals. It also presented the negative aspects of monetization methods when used improperly by game developers, and brought up suggestions on how these issues could possibly be remedied or mitigated.
