Visual Representation of Political Firsts in Sweden: A visual analysis of Magdalena Andersson at the intersection of gender stereotypes and political communication

Abstract [en]

In the year 2021, Magdalena Andersson achieved a historic milestone by becoming Sweden's first female head of state. Previous studies have found contrasting results with regards to female politicians and their media representations (Hayes & Lawless, 2015; Fernández-Rovira, & Giraldo-Luque, 2021; Smith, 2021; Van der Pas & Aaldering, 2020). Moreover, research suggests that a higher political role can create a more balanced portrayal with regards to gender stereotypes (Fernandes-Garcia, 2016; Verge & Pastor, 2018). This thesis aims to contribute to the field of political communication and gender studies by examining how Magdalena Andersson's role as head of state may have influenced her media representation in Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, two of the largest morning newspapers in Sweden, in the context of gender stereotypes. Utilising a social semiotic tool kit, the visual analysis of 32 images from their online platforms identified no major differences in visual representation nor apparent presence of gender stereotyping before and after the election, aligning with the neutral portrayal found in existing literature.
