The impact of substance use disorder on activities of daily living - a scoping review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Studierna genomfördes uteslutande i europeiska länder.
Abstract [en]
Introduction: Substance use disorders are increasing in Europe and the disease contributes to the global burden of disease and affects various aspects of a person's daily life. Occupational therapy facilitates participation in everyday activities based on individuals' and their wishes. Aim: To map research on how people with substance use disorder describe consequences for everyday life. Method: The study was conducted as a scoping review. Data collection was done through structured searches in CINAHL, AMED and Medline for scientific articles, articles published by occupational therapy professional associations and the articles' reference lists. The selection resulted in seven articles that were categorised and analysed according to the nine activities described by the American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA]. Results: All articles represented studies with qualitative methodology and with varying numbers of participants, age ranges and gender distribution. The studies were conducted exclusively in European countries. Five focused on drug dependence while two focused on alcohol dependence. In six articles, the results were supported by quotes. Many participants of the integrated articles expressed dissatisfaction with the activities they performed and described their lives as chaotic. Results were identified into seven AOTA categories. Conclusion: all articles presented results where participants were dissatisfied with the activities they were performing. Goals related to daily routines, employment, housing were described. Occupational therapists play a crucial role in helping people engage in activities that are personally meaningful.
