Abstract [en]

The built environment is heavily dependent on wasteful linear economic models and needs to transition to the circular economy (CE). One of the key enablers of CE is Digital Product Passports (DPPs). However, determining the necessary information and selecting suitable technologies remains to be challenging in practical implementations. This research aims to present a framework for implementing DPPs using Knowledge Graphs (KGs). A literature review was conducted to identify the key components of the framework. The result shows that the key elements encompass use cases identification, data collection, modelling, integration, governance, access and querying, and maintenance and updating.

Abstract [en]

With the growing adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, product providers are increasingly required to distribute their product specifications in digital models. Currently, proprietary formats, such as BIM objects supplemented by PDF documents, are predominantly used. However, these formats do not support flexible automated product searches and data integration. By semantically representing product data using ontologies and global standards, stakeholders can more efficiently search, integrate, and utilize product information across different platforms and tools, leading to improved collaboration, reduced errors, and enhanced decision-making throughout the product lifecycle.

This study explores the use of semantic web technologies for product data integration. In the semantic web domain, ontologies are vital for facilitating data integration and sharing. Recognizing the industry’s significant impact on resource consumption and waste production, this study aims to design a digital product passport (DPP) based on ontology and knowledge graphs. The DPP will serve as a comprehensive digital record of a product’s entire lifecycle to promote the shift towards a more sustainable, circular economy model.

The design science research (DSR) methodology is employed to develop and evaluate the DPP ontology and the associated method for product data integration. A modular ontological approach was adopted to systematically capture lifecycle information of products from origin to end-of-life to ensure the interoperability and reusability of the DPP ontology.

The research results include the development of reusable ontology modules to model DPPs for various use cases and a method that can be used for automated product search and integration in BIM platforms. The research outcome demonstrates the feasibility of using semantic web technologies and modular ontologies to manage complex product information to promote more sustainable management practices in the built environment sector.

Den ökande användningen av byggnadsinformationsmodellering (BIM) ökar kraven på att produktleverantörer tillgängliggör sin produktdata digitalt. För närvarande används främst proprietära format som BIM-objekt och PDF-dokument. Dessa format stödjer inte automatiserad produktsökning och dataintegration. Genom att representera produktdata med hjälp av ontologier och globala standarder kan aktörerna i byggindustrin effektivt söka, integrera och använda produktinformation över olika plattformar och verktyg, vilket leder till förbättrat samarbete, minskat antal fel och förbättrat beslutsfattande under produktens livscykel.

Denna studie utforskar användningen av semantisk webbteknologi för produktdataintegration. Inom den semantiska webbdomänen är ontologier avgörande för att underlätta dataintegration och interoperabilitet. Då byggbranschen har en betydande inverkan på resursförbrukning och avfallsproduktion syftar studien också till att utforma ontologi- och kunskapsgrafbaserade digitala produktpass (DPP), som fungerar som heltäckande digitala register över en produkts hela livscykel, för att stödja övergången mot en mer hållbar, cirkulär ekonomimodell.

Forskningsmetodiken Design science research (DSR) har använts för att utveckla och utvärdera DPP-ontologin och den associerade metoden för produktdataintegration. En modulär ontologimodelleringsmetodik har använts för att systematiskt fånga livscykelinformation för produkter och säkerställa interoperabilitet och återanvändbarhet för DPP-ontologin.

Forskningen har resulterat i utvecklingen av återanvändbara ontologimoduler för att modellera DPP för olika användningsfall och en metod som kan användas för automatiserad produktsökning ochintegration i BIM-plattformar. Forskningens resultat visar hur semantiska webbteknologier och modulära ontologier kan användas för att hantera komplex produktinformation med målet att utveckla en mer hållbar bebyggda miljön.
