Queer frames: How has the initiative #ActOut contributed to the framing of German newspapers regarding the LGBTQIA+ community? : A qualitative study with a short-term longitudinal framing analysis. (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis uses a short-term longitudinal framing analysis to examine the impact of the #ActOut initiative on German newspapers’ framing of the LGBTQIA+ community. Drawing on framing theory, agenda-setting, and Clark’s four stages of minority representation (1969), the study aims to assess changes in the framing of the German newspapers Bild, Frankfurter Allgemeine, and Süddeutsche Zeitung by analyzing ten articles of each outlet. The findings indicate that, despite the presence of the #ActOut initiative, the framing of the LGBTQIA+ community in German newspapers has not undergone significant changes. However, the analysis identified five different frames used in the coverage: the geographical frame, the distraction with fear frame, the LGBTQIA+ movement frame, the voice frame, and the heteronormativity frame. In conclusion, while the #ActOut initiative did not lead to substantial changes in the framing, it serves as a catalyst for discussions about LGBTQIA+ visibility and representation. The thesis recommends continued efforts to challenge and diversify framing patterns in German newspapers to promote a more inclusive media landscape.
