Supply chain risk identification and mitigation : A case study in the industrialized wood house industry in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]
Purpose – The challenges the industrialized wood house manufacturing industry in Sweden is facing, are risks and disruptions across the supply chain and the lack of knowledge in this area. The lack of knowledge about the risks present throughout the supply chain today makes it hard for the industry to mitigate these risks. Therefore, the purpose of this study is: Improve the knowledge of supply chain risks in the industrialized woodhouse manufacturing industry in Sweden and how these risks can be mitigated. To fulfil this purpose three research questions have been investigated: (1) What supply chain risks are there in a supply chain? (2) What supply chain risks existsin the industrialized woodhouse manufacturing industry in Sweden? (3) How can the negative effects of supply chain risks in the industrialized woodhouse industry in Sweden be mitigated?
Method – A single case study was carried out using inductive and deductive approaches to fulfil the purpose of the study. Primary data was collected from interviews at two different companies, which served as the qualitative data in the study. Secondary data was collected with a literature review, identifying risks existing in supply chains and methods to mitigate these risks. The data was then compared with the risks identified in the literature review to see what risks are in the industry and what risks are unique to the industry. Methods to mitigate risks identified in the literature review were suggested to reduce the risk’s negative effects. Analytical conceptual research was used to develop relationships between supply chain risks and the mitigation suggestions.
Finding – The study identified 36 existing supply chain risks in the literature, where 36 supply chain risks were identified in the industrialized woodhouse manufacturing industry. Three new supply chain risks were identified namely “changes in building regulations”, “global logistic blockage” and “slow or long customer information flow”.Of the 36 supply risk identified, 25 of them has been assigned a mitigation suggestion.
Implications – This study has identified supply chain risks and mitigation suggestionsto reduce the negative effects of the risks in the industry. By breaching the knowledge gap, the managers in the industry can use the information on the different risks and mitigation suggestions to reduce risks and risk impact in their supply chain. Thesemitigation suggestions can be used to improve the resilience of the supply chain andcan also be used to improve the production systems, by reducing the risks connected to production. The study result can be seen as a base for future research in this area of study. According to the literature review, no previous literature was found in this area. The result added three new identified risks in the literature of supply chain risks.
Limitations – During the study there were staff layoffs in the production departmentdue to the economic recession. These layoffs resulted in limited opportunities for interviews with production staff, resulting in four interviews regarding production risks being conducted. Of these four interviews, there was no blue colour production staffinterviewed. Due to the lack of research in the area, there is not guaranteed that mitigation suggestions recommended in the literature will have the desired effect in the industry studied in this research. This research is limited to making suggestions based on the recommended risk mitigation suggestions from the literature, without the knowledge what the practical effects of the mitigation suggestions are.
