Occupational therapists´reasoning about the professional role and the activities of older people during a heat wave (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Climate change in the form of warmer temperatures is increasing globally. Heat waves and warmer weather affect the health of older people and they are at risk. Occupational therapists work with older people and their activities of daily living. To meet an increasing older population in increasingly hot weather, knowledge is needed. Purpose: To shed light on occupational therapists' professional reasoning about the professional role and the daily activities of older people in warmer weather and heat waves. Method: Qualitative design with inductive approach, a strategic selection with semi-structured interviews of eight occupational therapists and qualitative content analysis was done. Results: Two overarching categories emerged: Reasoning about the professional role and Reasoning about activity adaptations with four subcategories each. Conclusions: Occupational therapists for reasoning about observation skills and flexibility and have knowledge about adaptation of activities and environment. This knowledge is mainly implicit and needs to be reinforced with guidelines and routines that increase the opportunities to work both explicitly and preventively. Implications: Knowledge in the area needs to be strengthened and clarified so that occupational therapists can develop their repertoire and design interventions for older people in warmer weather and heat waves.
