Generation of a DO178C compliant Software Design Specification: Incorporating the use of SCADE in aviation software projects
2023 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The main objective of this study was to establish a new Software Design Standard (SDS), which is a set of guidelines that are used to ensure consistency, quality, and maintainability in software design. This SDS was going to be created specifically for the utilization of the model-based development tool SCADE in the aviation industry. The research aimed to tackle the issue of lacking guidance for model-based development in the development process, by incorporating an SDS into the software design procedure in the form of an artifact. To further solidify its use in aviation projects, it was also going to cover the topics from DO-178C, Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification. The aim of the SDS was for it to function as an all-encompassing guide for the use of SCADE in safety critical software development within the aviation industry. The developed SDS is the fundamental result of this study. It was produced, executed, and appraised using the Design Science Research (DSR) approach, along with the Three-Cycle Model. The research first identified software design practices and challenges with model-based development in the aviation industry, to get a good understanding of its current state. After this, the requirements for the artifact were determined, and the cycles of developing and evaluating it started. When the final cycle had deemed the artifact ready, it was used in testing sessions to measure its usability and give it one final evaluation. The study has developed a complete SDS that describes the many important topics of the model-based development process, and it demonstrates the importance of modelbased development and the challenges involved in developing software for aviation systems. The SDS has been designed to meet the regulatory requirements described in DO-178C in order to ensure the safety and reliability of aviation systems. The information found in the SDS has been developed with a specific organization and tool which limits its use to some extent. Even if this is the case, it serves as a valuable resource for aviation organizations looking to adopt model-based development in their software development process
