Abstract [en]
Background: Family firms are a big part of the global economy, and they are present internationally. Family firms and their internationalization is a topic that has been a highly researched subject. There is, however, limited research into the internationalization process of the firms. Scholars have also suggested the need to integrate the SEW concept into studies on family business internationalization.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of how socioemotional wealth affects the process of family firm internationalization. More specifically, the study will investigate deeper into the process of family firm internationalization using the FIBER framework.
Method: The paper utilizes a general qualitative method; the study is performed with semistructured interviews. Further, this study uses the FIBER framework as a lens for the qualitative data.
Findings: This study explored the influence of socioemotional wealth, viewed through a FIBER lens, on the internationalization process of family firms. Family control and influence and Binding social ties function as facilitators for internationalization; they also function during the process and affect decision-making. Emotional attachment creates boundaries for decision-making regarding international decisions. Identification of family members with the firm and Renewal of family bonds to the firm through dynastic succession could not be linked to the internationalization process.
