Abstract [en]
Introduction: Entrepreneurship is becoming more common in Finland. The factors influencing entrepreneurs' well-being require more understanding. Life balance relates to health and well-being. Aim: This study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of Finnish entrepreneurs about life balance. Method: Study was conducted through semi-structured life-world interviews and inductive qualitative content analysis for detecting entrepreneurs’ perceptions and experiences of life balance. Findings: Analysis of entrepreneurs’ perceptions of life balance brought up two sub-themes: 1. Appropriate ratios between life areas and 2. Beyond occupations, along with a total of four categories. Analysis of entrepreneurs’ experiences brought up two sub-themes: 1. Boundaries and 2. Life balance can be affected, but it is not in your hands, along with a total of six categories. Conclusions: A life balance is a subjective experience that, to achieve, a person must feel safe and satisfied with his/her environment, health and well-being, occupational patterns, social relationships, and financial situation. Occupational balance is a subset of life balance. Significance: The experiential nature of life balance advocates the use of occupation-based and occupation-focused methods in supporting life balance. This notion encourages further research to define the role of an occupational therapist in supporting life balance.
