Heroes of the European Democracy or Victims of the “Undeveloped” Orient? : Representation of Syrian and Ukrainian Refugees in SVT Nyheter (English)
Abstract [en]

In this study we examined the Swedish news website SVT Nyheter using a content analysis, in order to highlight the representations of refugees during the refugee crisis in 2015 and 2022. The analysis consisted of 170 articles, 85 from each period. The analysis exposed both differences and similarities. The result showed that during both situations the refugees did not get to speak for themselves and their stories were rarely told. They were frequently referred to as a group and represented as a mass. Furthermore, the refugees were depicted as victims during 2015, yet the articles did not urge for help from the public. The result also showed a higher representation of refugees as something that needs to be controlled during the crisis in 2015, compared to the crisis in 2022. In addition, the refugees were rarely portrayed as a threat in the articles in 2015, while in 2022 it did not occur at all. We argue that these portrayals create an otherization, which to some extent can be entrenched in a colonial past, since SVT Nyheter reproduce the same hegemonic power relationship that were shaped during the colonialism.
