Abstract [en]

Background: Entrepreneurship is a noticeable subject in Vietnamese society nowadays. In recent years, Vietnam has emerged as a developing country with significant positive transformations in the startup ecosystem. When it comes to entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial intention often receives attention from researchers since it is considered an indicator of entrepreneurial behaviors. Many factors can affect entrepreneurial intention, and one of them is personality traits. So far, research on the relationship between personality traits and entrepreneurial intention has taken various approaches with some limitations, such as using broad personality traits or using a small group including a few personality traits. It is worth noting that studies following these approaches frequently rely on data gathered from university students.

Purpose: The ultimate goal of this paper is to examine the impact of personality traits on entrepreneurial intention among Vietnamese university students. The authors selected a group of seven personality traits proposed by Dominika Dej as a framework for this study in an attempt to overcome the gaps from previous studies. They include need of achievement, locus of control, risk-taking propensity, tolerance for ambiguity, creativity, need of autonomy, and self-efficacy. This paper only focuses on personality traits as a determinant of entrepreneurial intention, leaving out non-personality factors.

Method: Quantitative research was conducted on a sample of 108 university students in Vietnam. An online survey was sent to respondents to collect information. In the survey, scales from previous studies were used to measure the level of entrepreneurial intention and seven personality traits. Finally, confirmatory factor analysis and multiple linear regression were applied to analyze the collected data in SPSS and SPSS Amos.

Conclusion: In general, personality traits generate a moderate positive influence on the entrepreneurial intention of university students in Vietnam. However, the level of impact varies among these seven personality traits. Concretely, four personality traits studied (need for achievement has the most substantial influence, followed by creativity, internal locus of control, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy) have significant effects. In contrast, three others (risk-taking propensity, tolerance for ambiguity, and need for autonomy) have no impact on predicting the entrepreneurial intention of university students in Vietnam.
