Impact of constructors for increased recycling of building materials (English)
Abstract [en]

Today a big part of the earth's waste comes from the construction and real estate industry. For a change to take place, a large increase in recycled building materials is required. Today, many of the larger companies in the construction industry are working towards a solution, yet there are no systems for the projects to be made profitable.

If all parts take their responsibility to influence, the reuse of materials may increase in the future. The purpose of the study has been to investigate how different parts work towards improvement and what were the driving forces and obstacles to an improvement. An interview study was implemented with respondents who are active in the construction and real estate industry with different roles and experience.

Today, research and pilot projects are carried out with recycled building materials, but there is still no upscaling to enable recycled material as standard. The study has resulted in increased knowledge about how all parts in the industry work towards recycling more and what are seen as the biggest challenges to be able to perform on an industrial scale. What emerges as the biggest challenges today are the financial incentives that are still too low for recycling to be prioritized. New business models and new requirements from municipalities and customers need to be introduced for cooperation to be improved. It also appears that the developer owns it primary responsibility, but that together with new services and all players in the industry need to drive for a change together.

For further research in recycling, the difference of importance between reuse recycling towards climate-neutral construction should be studied. In addition, recycling should be studied further to not create waste in the future but to promote circular construction. As further research on this study, business models and requirements should be further developed to promote future projects.
