Teacher's use of representations when teaching multiplication (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to give a depiction of how teachers in primary school experience the importance of representations when teaching multiplication in math. Representation is used to communicate a mathematical content and teachers need to create a teaching where pupils meet several representations and see the connection between them.  The study is based on Duval´s theory, which emphasizes that for a mathematical concept to be understood, it must be expressed with representations. The study was inspired by phenomenography where qualitative interviews are used.  In the study semi-structured interviews were conducted with six teachers in grade 1-3 who teach multiplication. The result was finalized and categorized into five categories of descriptive. A conclusion of the study shows how teachers experience the importance using concreate representation and develop to abstract representation. It was found and stated how important it is to create a teaching environment where students see connections between representations forms and develop an understanding of multiplicative structures. The teachers’ statements show that they present multiplication with one and two dimensions.  The linguistic representation is used for pupils to orally express their multiplicative reasoning.
