Family social participation related to children with disabilities: A concept analysis

Introduction: Participation is essential in promoting health and well-being. There is no clear definition for participation or social participation leading to confusion among practitioners. Children with disabilities and their families are at risk of restricted participation. Identifying the attributes involved in the participation of family social participation related to children with disabilities assists Occupational therapists in applying in their clinical practice. Aim: To examine and define the concept of family social participation related to children with disabilities. Method: Walker and Avant's (2011) concept analysis. Results: Twelve articles were included in this study related to the concept. Three defining attributes were identified: it includes engaging in life situations, it requires attendance, being involved, and frequency of contact, and it contains a supportive family. 

Conclusions:  The concept of family social participation related to children with disabilities is characterised by engaging in life situations with physical attendance, involvement, and frequency of contact with others as a requirement and supportive family. 

 Significance: Occupational therapists and other health care professionals can use the concept's attributes, antecedents and consequences to develop measures in their care plan.
