Possible applications of generative design in industrialized house building: A case study
2022 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

While most of the construction industry consists of engineer-to-order products that are tailor-made to fitvarious requirements and needs, the industrial house manufacturers forego this strategy in favor of product and processstandardization, using modular standardized products combined in different ways to fill the need for customization.Generative design is a method utilizing AI and parametric design in order to optimize building design for certain goals.Engineer-to-order projects have seen success in using generative design to optimize various parts of building projects, however there is little knowledge on how industrial house building companies can benefit from this method. It’s thereforeimportant to identify the uses of generative design that would be beneficial for these companies to use. This studytherefore aims to provide a view of which generative design uses industrial house building companies should focus on.To achieve this, a case study and semi-structural interviews have been conducted with one of Sweden’s largest industrialhouse building companies. The conclusion is that the level of digitalization and production flexibility is currentlynot at a high enough level to support the full use of generative design in most cases. However some project planninguses don’t affect the product platform or production capabilities, which means that they are more suitable for industrialhouse building companies to use. The recommendation is therefore that these companies focus on uses related to specificproject planning, the main ones being neighborhood planning and construction site planning, since these usesdoesn’t affect the complex building systems or production lines that the companies rely on.
