The purpose of this research is to identify feasible areas for usage of blockchain and smart contracts within supply chains, as well as, illuminating barriers and motivational factors for implementation of this technology in supply chains. A brief general explanation is given about supply chains and blockchain technology, which works as a base for the upcoming literature review. Different definitions within blockchain technology are also explained and defined. A quantitative and qualitative research approach was chosen for this research. Company interviews and surveys were conducted as a collection of empirics which were analyzed and discussed. Secondary data collection consists of a literature review which was conducted through a systematic literature review. The companies for the interviews were carefully chosen as well as the participants for the surveys. A thorough analysis was orchestrated, which in result, fulfilled the answering of the research questions. The findings of this research focus on identifying feasible areas, barriers and motivational factors for blockchain technology and smart contracts within supply chains. After the analysis of literature and empiric data collected through surveys and interviews, feasible areas, barriers and motivational factors are also illuminated. Moreover, a holistic framework is also proposed to surpass the identified barriers. Important to notice that this research does not conclude a clear step-by-step programme towards integration of blockchain technology. It rather presents the proposed framework and highlights areas of feasibility, barriers & motivational factors for integration of blockchain technology and smart contracts within supply chain.
