Abstract [en]

Ghana is one of the countries where the equality between genders is lacking. The circumstances for girls born in Ghana are worse than they are for boys. The focus of this study is to research how the work to oppose inequality between genders in Ghana operate at a non-profit level. Therefore, our purpose of this study is to understand the challenges regarding the work with gender equality and girl empowerment in a developing country. Our research question is “How can gender equality work look in a developing country?”

The empirical data of this study has been collected through eight semi-structured interviews with volunteers and professionals in the organization Play and Learn Foundation, which is based in Accra, Ghana. The collected data has been analyzed with a thematic analysis. During the analysis four head themes were identified. These four being the structure of the program, support, challenges, and changes. The result has been analyzed using empowerment theory.
